2000ad Sci-Fi Special 2018Next, a new character Tyranny Rex Don't forget about my cacheScript: Katy Rex Art: Liana Kangas Colours: Liana Kangas/Gab Contreras Letters: Ellie De Ville Bit of a weird story here but its very different to what seen in other 2000ad stuff for a while. Main character is a part-lizard artist who makes a living any way she can including torrenting 3D downloads. The newest of which goes a little wrong...Luckily her admirer who is also a bit of a hacker is able to help. -edited out image to save space - Wasn't a fan of the art or story but its different which is nice though no idea if the character will return again in the main prog or future sci-fi specials Tyranny Rex isn't a new character, she was a mainstay of the mag in the late 80ies early 90ies, with great stories from John Smith and Steve Dillon, maybe Dillon's best art ever actually. She had a Heavy Metal mag vibe, with british writing quircks... I am corrected but still vnew to me lol Not around in 80s and to young in 90s so not familiar much with all characters then (: something to look up

She's a character very close in tradition to the Pedro Henry ones, like Axel Pressbutton, Zirq, or even Moore's Dr & Quinch, one of the best strips of 2000AD (don't let the revival color your judgment).
TR's creator, John Smith, had a weird career : as a rising star of 2000AD, he was of course sought by DC and US comics. The first offer came with a fill-in for Hellblazer, the amazing #51, featuring early Sean Philips art for the US, a one-off story set in a lavomatic, really creepy and fun.
This led to a series at Vertigo in 1993, the infamous Scarab. Why infamous you may ask? Because the series was terrible : the idea behind wasn't half bad, some kind of early Sentry for the then expected Vertigoverse. but the execution was poor, the artwork dreadfull, and that was more or less the end of Smith's US carreer : outside of a couple of short stories for Malibu and one for X-Men unlimited in the early 00ies, he had a decent run on Vamoirella, on the tail of Morrison and Millar's work. But after the epic fail that Scarab was, it was mostly back to the UK, where he's worked on 2000AD or JD Megazine constantly since.

2000 AD seems to be keen on bringing back od characters in recent years. Very surprised by the sudden, unexpected reappearance of Armoured Gideon in the latest series of The Order.

A lot of these reboots like Chopper I was not reading when was featured first in 2000ad so to have old characters come back means can learn about them other then in trade copies. If it wise to bring them back randomly in a new story I don't know Good for old fans I guess
