2. The Vulture by Steve DitkoMy introduction to superheroes came from the local video store with VHS cassettes of shows taken from the old Marvel Superheroes show, . Sub-Mariner, Captain America, Thor... These cassettes had a trailer-like ad for the entire series of videos, which I think also drew from the '60s Spider-Man and Fantastic Four shows as part of the set. The series of brief images in that trailer was my introduction to many a hero and villain. And two designs stuck with me enough to make them my #1 and #2 this year. One was this old man who looked like a vulture, in a feather suit with a weird collar thing. Fast forward 30 years. Spider-Man is my favorite superhero. Ditko's Spider-Man comics my favorite comics. And the best rogues gallery created in just 33 issues. Plenty of designs I considered. Dr. Octopus, Sandman... I love them all (except Green Goblin). But this is the one. Made to fight Spider-Man in the sky.

#2- BLACK CATOne of the Spider-Man villians that should've been a throw away but had a such mass appeal and major longivity. Created by Marv Wolfman and David Cockrum, the Black Cat (Felicia Hardy) hits number two on my list. Another simple black and white design done right. Dave Cockrum's look of the cat burglar suit with white animal fur fringe on the leggings and arms, along with a white mane is great. The original design was white gloves and boots with the fur but slowly gave away to a more black bodysuit and boots , but retaining the fur. Simple diamond mask and you got a classic look. Not bad for 1979...

“Like a dark phoenix rising from the ashes, the ebony-armored malefactor has ripped himself from the horrific husk that had been Force Commander, king of Homeworld! Sound the funeral march! Baron Karza is back!” (Micronauts vol. 1, #50) 2. Baron Karza
The basic design from Mego toys was dramatically enhanced by artist Michael Golden and no one ever managed to render Karza properly after him. The armoured look is a must for the well-dressed mad scientist slash mystic slash brutal dictator, naturally. Karza's armour is jet black with just a few highlights of red. What makes his look work so well is how the whole thing is reduced to the simplest of lines (and that's what later artists failed to grasp). Those horns on his helmet? They're straight points. That grid over his mouth? It's flat, with three slits in the front, and although it may give the impression of a constant sneer, it is not curved like a grinning mouth would be. The brow? a regular ellipse, not an eyebrow-shaped curve that varies from picture from picture... This is a real, solid-looking chunk of metal. The top of his head? It's flatter than J. Jonah Jameson's. It adds to a certain, shall we say, industrial look. The joints are spherical, with what looks like red bolts jutting out. The boots are a little less mechanical-looking, a little more organic, but are still straight black things that come to mid-thigh and very simple (in the good sense). Karza must be one of the villains I must enjoyed drawing as a kid.

2. Two-Face created by Bill Finger (writer) and Jerry Robinson (artist) with Bob Kane claiming credit and possibly contributing. Appropriately for my #2 slot, Harvey Dent, Two-Face, who made my list of favorite characters way way back in the early days of this event! I first encountered Two-Face in Brave & Bold #106, his second Silver Age appearance, where he took on the pair of Batman and Green Arrow. I was immediately taken with the look--unlikely though it was, the "split straight down the middle" scarring was striking, but what really hit home was that he embraced his dual character by adopting clothing that also differed bilaterally. I've always thought of the big Batman villains as embodying different forms of mental illness, and Two-Face is Bipolar Disorder, with his depressed by attractive right side and his manic and shocking left side, neither one dominating but both always looming. Such a perfect depiction! And of course, the accessories are a big part of any outfit, and Two-Face has one of the most memorable, his two-headed coin, one side defaced like his own.

2. The Punisher - John Romita Sr and Ross AndruLets get this straight right from the start, I dont consider Frank to be an anti-hero, let alone a hero, at all. Sure I empathise, but he is not right in the head, and Marvel would be so much better without him, both fictionally and IRL too. HOWEVER As costume designs go this is sheer perfection, simple but theres no doubt what hes here for. That said I now have the dilemma of actually liking the Netflix show...damn you real life.

2. The Gentleman GhostNot much I can say about Gentleman Jim Craddock that hasn't already been said. He's the reason Johnny Sorrow was dropped from my list: I really only had room for one empty suit of clothes, and I've loved the Ghost for longer than Sorrow has been around. The Ghost is probably the most dapper supervillain around. While the Penguin's finery is obviously an affectation, this is just who Craddock is. While I preferred it when it was ambiguous if the Ghost was an actually ghost or just a very clever charlatan, these days it has been solidly established that he is a supernatural entity. I still love the look, however.

The Joker. Not Adams' version, not Rogers' version, not Novick's or Infantino's. This one. The bone-chilling creepy original. That clown in It before Stephen King was ever dreamt of, the souless misshapen creature who killed at will, for vengeance, for terror, for the sheeer sadistic thrill of it. A murderous agent of anarchy, a leering, sleepy-eyed, cold-blooded killer. Probably physically as well as mentally ill. The Batman's Id. Spare me all the others. You know who they are. This one is the Joker. Otherwise, this is the only real Joker.

I said yesterday that I knew RR was going to post Eternity, based on his question about cosmic characters. It's true and it's also true that I was thinking the same thing. I don't consider Eternity a villain, but I got permission from High Lord hisself Kurt if Eternity would qualify and he said why not Another great Ditko visual Not only does he have the cosmos as the fabric of his being, but that Ditko touch of the cape, collar and that funk-tastic head gear The Infinite Man from another post was on my short list and ultimately got cut cause I decided to go with the first character that had that cosmic look, being Eternity, though The Infinite Man probably, technically, should be listed here as definitely more of a villain, but oh well

2. Deathstroke the TerminatorEverything is badass about this character especially his costume. Chainmail, half black and Orange mask, buccaneer boots , Ninja Swords- you name it. The Classic look Is the best and he could whip anyones butt including Batman( which he did in his series).
