#11 The Fire-Haired KarlaAquaman #24 (1965) Karla considers herself a freak due to her living, flaming hair, which she obtained as the result of an "industrial accident." She takes up with a couple of other powered-up outcasts--an Invisible Un-Thing and the Fisherman--to do battle with Aquaman, Mera and Aqualad. Her costume is basic but when you're drawn by Nick Cardy who cares? He outdid himself when it came to that hair--she's like the love child of Johnny Storm and Medusa. Even though Karla is the leader of The Terrible Trio, she seems more misunderstood than evil. There's a lot of fighting and name-calling but by the end of the story she's forged an understanding with Aquaman. From what I can tell this was Karla's only appearance, which is a pity IMO--she has such a great visual. {Spoiler}{Spoiler} I have never, ever heard of this character in my whole life and this one really got me intrigued!

11. The Puzzler
A new version of an old Superman villain, this incarnation of the Puzzler was introduced in 2002 and has made a handful of appearances since then. Although not strictly speaking a 'costume', her appearance qualifies under the rules of the 12 Days. I just find the visual of a woman composed of jigsaw puzzle pieces to be a striking visual. I think it works much better with the curves of the female form than it would for a male. It lends itself to all kind of interesting visual effects as pieces fly off and then reform themselves.

11. MysterioA guy with a fishbowl for a head. In all seriousness, I love this costume. Perhaps it has something to do with the dark green and purple, two colours that just work perfectly together. Also, the eyes on the clasps of the cape give it that eeriness. Ditko drew him best IMO but Romita also did a nice job. Thankfully, no one (to my knowledge) has really altered the design and to me that speaks to just how strong it is.

The ProwlerI first encountered this short-lived villain in the daily Spider-Man newspaper strip. Just loved the look of the mask, the clawed gauntlets, whatever that design on his chest is supposed to represent... a character I really enjoyed drawing as a kid. And there's that purple (sometimes) and green again. I too love the purple and green combo...I feel it could be even more purple on this cover though and the green on this design just lacks the pop. It seems to me that some of the interior work looked better at times on the Prowler. Did he ever get a decent solo series or was he ever used in a way that was interesting? I feel like that costume design is great and has a lot of similarities to looks that were hot in the 90's, particularly a character like Spawn.

If memory serves, Prowler's costume was designed by a very young, years-away-from-going-pro John Romita, Jr.
Cei-U! I summon the precocious pedigree!

Love the Mysterio choice, pink. I had to cut him from my final 12, so I'm glad he made someone's list!

I think in the earlier comics it was a very muted purple, almost grey (well on this cover it looks totally grey), but when they revived him in the 90s it became brighter. He had a miniseries in the mid-90s and apparently another just recently, but I've not read either.

The story I recall Romita Sr. relating is that they were on a family car trip and JR Jr. created The Prowler in an exercise to keep him from whining the entire trip.

Random thoughts on Day 2...because that's just what I continue to do.
Captain Nazi was definitely given consideration. Striking costume.
Somehow I forgot about Bullseye. He wouldn't have made my list, but I like that look a lot.
Dr. Doom is definitely an iconic look. I tried, overall, to avoid The Usual Suspects.
Morbius probably flew under my radar because I tend to think of him as a protagonist. But he's got a good look.
The Living Tribunal and Eternity both were given consideration. I dismissed them as not being sufficiently villainous.
Crusher Creel is another one with a good look.
Quicksilver absolutely was appropriate. I like the look of the White Queen better though.
Ah Luthor. As people know, I'm a long-time Superman hater. That doesn't necessarily roll over to his rogues though. I like both the SA Luthor look and the power armor.
I haven't read I Kill Giants. I probably should.
Madame Satan is cool. I like the contrast of the face with the rest of the look.
The Prowler. Hmmmm...I gotta say I'm not a fan. He needs better detergent. He has a big stain on his shirt.
I don't think I would have thought of Ma'Alefa'Ak. I am always glad to see anything by Ostrander and Mandrake though.
Baron Karza. I never read the Micronauts. I'm not quite feeling him.
Mrs. Pruneface. Awesome. Both Pruneface and Flattop were late additions and then subtractions from my list. I'm happy for the Dick Tracy love.
Deadshot is another one I considered. I think it may have been because of how much I liked him in Suicide Squad and his mini rather than the actual design though.
Hookjaw I don't know. But I like the pick.
Johnny Sorrow came along after I'd mostly given up superhero comics. I like the look though.
The Fire-Haired Karla...that's a left field pick. How does her flame stay lit underwater? Something something carpet drapes. Hmmmm...
Crimson Dynamo is a nice contrast with Iron Man...but I'm not in love with the look.
Holy Moly...how did I forget the Phantom Blot. I'm not going to change my list, but he would have vied for a spot if I had thought of him.
The Joker. For a LOT of years my favorite villain. Unfortunately overexposure has been a major detriment. I do like the classic look, but again I mostly wanted to avoid the big guns.
I'd never heard of The Puzzler, not being a Superman fan. Interesting look.
Mysterio was a sad deletion from my list. I'm glad he's getting love...though I kind of knew he would.

Slam_Bradley ... Thank You. Update: I'm taking out Quicksilver and replacing it with White Queen only.
