I've got seven good candidates for my Top Five, I just need to abandon two of them to get a final list. But I can't remember the name of one of them or what comic it appeared in. (A lot of my collection is in storage at present.) So maybe somebody can please help me identify it for when I make my list? It's an EC story, with art by Will Elder, and I think it probably appeared in Tales of the Crypt, Vault of Horror or Haunt of Fear. BUT it might have been in one of the science fiction books, or even in Shock SuspenStories. It's about a big city police detective investigating a murder where the body was found with no head! The detective finds out that this had been happening all over the country, numerous headless bodies have turned up! And they're all scientists and mathematicians and smart people like that. Just when he thinks he's got it figured - WHAM! - he's knocked unconscious! When he wakes up, he finds ... Well, I don't want to give it away. I hope that's enough clues for somebody to help me identify this chilling tale. Thanks! Sadly, my knowledge of pre-code horror is lacking. I'm looking forward to hearing about more stories like this one from our lists. |

Shax, I have two other EC horror stories on my list that will definitely make it past the cut. Fortunately, I remember the titles so it was easy to find which issues they were in. (And they are both accessible! I got the reprints out of their longboxes and am going to read them over lunch.)
A lot of the EC stories are very formulaic. You can count on fun stories in every issue of Crypt, Vault and Haunt, but there aren't always very many that stand out. (IMHO.)
But there are a few that have really been embedded in my mind over the years. Number One was no contest. It's been a favorite for close to 20 years.

My list is still pretty fluid, I have it narrowed down to ten comics and I'm just going to sort of leave it to chance as to which make the final five.

I don't really read horror comics, so I'm having some trouble putting together a list. When I have a list, I am pretty sure it's going to be terrible and weird. But I'll come up with something, one way or another.

I hardly read classic horror. I know there's a ton of excellent Golden Age horror out there, but I just recently started reading Golden Age comics. Mostly horror at this point, but still very little of it. Just Haunted Horror, one Yoe hardcover, and one EC hardcover so far. So there seems to have been a bit of a slump in horror from around the 1970's to right before our cutoff date. There was a handful in the genre here and there, but nothing like it was, and seems to me nothing like it is now. Also, I haven't read hardly any horror mags, although I love them. I have a small stack of Creepy and Eerie, that's it. So a lot of my choices will be relatively modern compared to most.

So there seems to have been a bit of a slump in horror from around the 1970's to right before our cutoff date. Literally ALL of my Top 5 are from between 1970 and 1989. The 70's brought the relaxing of the comics code, as well as the expansion of the horror magazine format, and the 1980s brought the rise of the pre-Vertigo mature readers sub-genre. |

I don't know about that, despite lacking the horror anthology books that fueled a lot of the great horror in the 50's, 60's and 70's the 80's were a pretty solid decade for horror and although weaker the 90's weren't bad either.

You know, I'm not sure we've had a single overlap this year. A bunch of people chose Gaiman Sandman stories, but even then, I don't think any two people picked the same one.

No overlap in the same week, but someone did pick Wolves of Saint August early on, I think it was Bronzeagebrian.
So I'm the only copycat.
I thought about changing it, but wolves is seriously one of my ton ten favorite comics of all time.

I hope it's okay to give a quick thanks here to all the participants. It was a pleasure "focus-grouping" your entries. By that I mean lurking and devouring every word and image like a starving badger, without having to lift a finger in return. 
I thought I knew a thing or two about horror comics. I know nothing. Thank you for that. |
