How goes your list? What old comics are you dredging up, and how much more narrowing down do you have ahead of you? I'm liking your thinking here Shax. All I'm thinking is that rummaging through boxes of old Warren and Marvel/Curtis mags in order to refresh my memory is going to be ridiculously fun  |

Sounds absolutely great.
You won't believe how happy I'll be to finally get my collection sorted and re-boxed someday so I can actually do that.
I hardly have any Warren's but have probably at least half the Marvel black and whites from back in the day. I love em. It's weird how they still get overlooked by so many.

So, without having actually gone through my boxes yet, I have my initial list narrowed down to:
4 Big Two superhero stories (all from the 1970s)
2 Big Two non-superhero stories (both from the 1980s)
2 Marvel/Curtis horror mag stories (1970s)
2 Anthropomorphic stories (one from the '40s; one from the '90s)
1 independent graphic novel (1980s)
and at least a dozen stories from Creepy and Eerie (all from the 1970s)
Having never really gotten into the 1950s pre-code stuff (it's the prohibitive cost of collecting more than any specific dislike for the era), most of my picks will inevitably come from the 1970s, when the code relaxed and comics got experimental and fun again.
Anyway, got some narrowing down to do...

Have I even read five horror comics?
I assume this is "dark old house up on the hill with a secret dweller drawn by Bernie Wrightson" horror and not "written by Chuck Austen and drawn by Rob Liefeld" horror?

For some reason, horror just does not work for me in the comics format. Movies-yes.Prose-for sure. But comics-nope. I appreciate ECs for the art and humor in their horror stories. But no horror comic ever actually scared me

That's my feeling as well, outside of a few jump scares(like things crashing suddenly through windows) I can't think of a single film that legitimately scared me. I can think of many that conjured up feeling of dread or suspense though and that's really what I love and I can think of many comics that have caused similar reactions. This is going to be a blast! Off the top of my head, I can think of one issue of Batman that immediately demands to be on the list but the others may take a little time. |

I've mentioned mine a few times in your review thread already so it probably won't be a big surprise, but it's a must have in my mind. I think Corben is a must as well but I haven't decided on the story yet.

I've not yet read it and am seriously debating whether I want to read it for this list or wait until it comes up in a few months' time for the Batman review thread. The writer will likely be making my list anyway. I absolutely have my Corben story picked out already. |
