I watched the first episode of Black Butler and wasn't feeling it either.

I agree... I've read the 1st 2 comics, I think, and watched a couple episodes, and there was something about it that just didn't catch me.

Are there any good one-volume/one-shot mangas out there? I want to dip my toes into the Manga world, but starting a series composed of many volumes seems to intimidating at the moment.

This is tangentially related. Quoting from Metafilter: Multiple websites are out there to help you dine like an anime character. Typically, they consist of anime screencaps plus either adapted or invented recipes that attempt to replicate the dishes. Okonomiyaki, dainty strawberry cakes, gyoza, Ponyo's ramen, coffee jelly, you name it! There's the earnest Real Anime Food. Then there's the sillier Recipes for Weebs, which has functional indices. Anime Recipes hasn't updated in a year, but it has a long list of recipes, including the fish pie from Kiki's Delivery Service. More? Itadakimasu Anime seems to focus on general dishes that show up in many anime, like purin and omurice (with copious screencaps). Culinary Adventures and More: Real Life Anime Food. Otaku Recipes. Anime B&B: Food (not a ton of recipes, but very detailed). Foodie Fanart has a wider range of influences beyond anime. And if you can read Japanese, Animeshi. Anime recipes show up on YouTube, too (warning for autoplay): Feast of Fiction has a wide range of source material, including a few anime. Miki's Pantry will teach you how to make sootball and Dragonball cookies. Finally, Anime Foods is FULL OF GIFS. www.metafilter.com/141445/Dinnertime-cosplayrealanimefood.tumblr.com/recipesforweebs.tumblr.com/animerecipes.tumblr.com/itadakimasuanime.wordpress.com/culinaryadventuresandmore.blogspot.com/search/label/Real%20Life%20Anime%20Foodotaku-recipes.tumblr.com/marinasauce.wordpress.com/category/food/foodie-fanart.tumblr.com/blog.animeshi.net/www.youtube.com/channel/UCmuK_ntZEGCXOmnfZW_LWnwwww.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsLaY1rRIHKvso2Upy9AzdRYZiw2fgBdOanime-foods.tumblr.com/

I don't think anyone of the ones I've read are one shots... much like Marvel and DC, though, I think alot of the long running series you can grab one and go for it and not be too confused... alot of them even have recaps in the front.

For some reason I thought Ghost in the Shell was one of those really long (20+ volume) manga.
And, Rob, that might be my favorite post here.

There are some one-shot manga's, but they usually don't get translated I guess.
Not even getting into all the Doujinshi where most of it is very short.

The original was a movie, so that makes sense... there is a follow up series, but IIRC, the movie is pretty self contained.... so I'd assume the manga is as well.

Read the first three chapters of Kiseijuu (Parasyte) after watching the trailer for the anime. It is gruesome and bizarre and has some good laughs. Glad I finally got around to checking this out.

I'm about 20 chapters into Parasyte now and really enjoying it. It's gory but I wouldn't call it ultra violent. Plus the story is pretty interesting. Looking forward to watching the anime after I finish reading the manga.

I read some Terra For Mars and Btoom!
Of the two I liked Terra Formars better, Btoom! was pretty underwhelming.
Terra Formars (yes, that's not a type, it's a pun. It's about terraforming Mars.): Only read Volume 1 so far, which was kinda weird, but interesting. It's sci-fi and pretty far future: 500 years ago, humanity decided to terraform Mars, because the population of Earth was growing too large. They did this with a moss and cockroaches. 500 years later, humanity travels to Mars to find the cockroaches have evolved into a humanoid species and they don't like humans at all. If you have phobia of bugs and insects, this series is not for you. Not only are the aliens cockroaches, the humans have been genetically engineered with insect traits to combat the aliens. Most of the human cast gets little development though and the main character (who is of course a young, Japanese man, because manga) is the least interesting of the bunch. The cockroach aliens are hitting the uncanny valley in just the right spot for me, one of the few times aliens are really creepy to me. Usually they are either too humanoid or unreadable.
Btooom!: As I said, I liked this one lest. People are trapped on an island and forced into a deadly game of survivor... which basically is Battle Royal, but without the stuff that made Battle Royal interesting (political background or the former relationships between the people now forced to be enemies). The gimmick for this game is that every participant has a belt with bombs (different contestants have different types of bombs). So far it was pretty by numbers and I won't be getting volume 2.
