man....Attack On Titan is probably the best manga out since Rurouni Kenshin (and thats old school). Pretty much every manga fan is reading Titan right now. Not me I know, I'm the only one.. but I'm the only one not watching Walking Dead, either . I generally like dubbed better, because it's easier, but the voice acting is almost always better and fits better with the character in the original.

yeah rule of thumb, always go with subtitles. lol Unless we're talking Miyazaki. I kind of like the dubs the newer Disney editions have done. That's because Miyazaki can get real actors to do the voices (good ones, too), instead of the group of 15 or so people that Funimation has on staff that appear over and over again. I agree his are always great

Heh. I saw this thread, and I thought to myself "I'm going to pitch 20th Century Boys if no one's mentioned it yet, what a great series". And it's the first title mentioned in the thread! I'm actually only 13 volumes into it, though. I'm re-reading it now, it just so happens that it's one of the few manga titles our local smalltown library has in their collection. On a completely different note, a series I've also been enjoying very much, is Black Cat. It's about these two bounty hunters, one of which is an ex-member of a crime syndicate who used to be known as the Black Cat. The premise may sound very similar to the anime Cowboy Bebop, but it's a notch more light-hearted, and the main character is a cross between Spike Spiegel and Goku (he's always thinking about food). It's set on Earth, either in the present day or a bit into the future, not sure which. I was thinking about a thread like this as well. I have ZERO experience with manga, but while looking over a garage sale in my neighborhood last week I noticed a whole shelf of stuff being sold for $1 each. The girl running the sale mentioned all of the books were her sisters, who now lives in Hawaii and gave the green light to sell them off. I helped the seller organize the collection, telling her I thought she might have better luck grouping runs together. To make a long story short, I decided to make her an offer on a few series. I was immediately drawn to the first volume of Black Cat. Why, you ask? Style. A character on the cover sports a fedora and eye-patch, a cigarette dangles from his fingers. I needed to find out his story. Here is what I picked out after browsing. Black Cat...1-11 Satisfaction Guaranteed 1-4 Tokyo Babylon 1-7 (complete series) Ragnarok 1-10 (missing Vol. 4) She hooked me up with everything, plus a sweet Led Zep t-shirt, for $15. Following day she comes over to my house with the missing Ragnarok #4, which she stumbled upon after I left and said I deserved for helping her out. Started with Tokyo Babylon, think I'm going to like it. MT THat's an incredible deal! Manga is REALLY hard to find used, and when it is it's usually not that cheap. Black Cat is pretty decent... I've seen the others but not actually read them.

I guess I don't mind reading subtitles, I kinda just prefer the original voice cast's intention and feeling.

I generally agree, but I also find it frustrating when an anime contains both a lot of dialogue and a lot of pertinent visual info at the same time. I hate feeling like I'm missing something at the top of the screen while I'm reading through the words at the bottom. I'd imagine anime directors don't really consider mono-linguistic gaijin when making their films.

I'm also enjoying Blue Exorcist and Attack on Titan on Toonami along with Black Lagoon and the new season of Space Dandy.

I'm also enjoying Blue Exorcist and Attack on Titan on Toonami along with Black Lagoon and the new season of Space Dandy. I actually purchased Black Lagoon a bit ago.. just before it hit Toonami. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was... I was half-expecting fansservice garbage, but it turned out to be really deep.

Have you gotten past the first couple of volumes, though? That said, I'm actually not a big fan of Attack on Titan, either. Not because it seems like a generic zombie story, which I don't think it is (it leans more towards Mystery/Thriller with strong horror/gore elements). It's just too damn grim for me. I don't think every story should be happy and it actually does what it sets out to do very well. So for people who enjoy the story I'm glad there's something out there for them. But when I dive into something I don't want to be beaten into hopelessness. And damn if there's no light at the end of this tunnel.

My son said Deathnote was pretty good. The write up at Comixology sounded pretty good too.
Blue Exorcist sounds like something I would never ever even look at, but I gave it a glance and that sounded ok too. In the past, outside of Lone Wolf and Cub and Crying Freeman, I wouldn't even look at manga.

I guess I don't mind reading subtitles, I kinda just prefer the original voice cast's intention and feeling. I guess it does depend on the series. I prefer the subtitled versions of Ergo Proxy and Gun Sword opposed to the English dubs. I absolutely love the English dub of FLCL though.

Blue Exorcist is very enjoyable, though it's anime adaptation has a crappy ending.

I only read the 1st volume... it had no redeeming qualities in it, IMO, so I didn't get any more. I thought the Titans were just giant zombies, the characters were generic and hard to tell apart (perhaps because they die alot?), and the plot was thoroughly uninteresting. I guess you're supposed to care what the Titans want, or where they come from? To be honest, I'm not really sure what the 'hook' is, if it's not giant zombies. Keep in mind I despise Zombie stuff in particular, and pretty much Horror in general. I also agree that it was pretty grim... by the end of the 1st volume it seemed pretty much completely hopeless, in fact... perhaps that was also part of my problem.

I agree with everything you said about AoT (although I do enjoy horror). Despite having the first two volumes, I don't think I even finished the first. I couldn't tell who was who. I've been tempted to try the anime, but when I tried watching on Netflix is was really bad quality. I may check again.
I read the first chapter of Deadman Wonderland, and liked it enough to order the first three volumes.

Deadman Wonderland is so dark and depressing, yet your really root for the main character to make it through his ordeal. I didn't like the anime ending though. I seem to be saying that a lot in this thread aren't I?
