I've only read one manga creator, and that being one with a more western influence.
But boy, Junji Ito can really draw and really scare the hell out of you. His Uzumaki is a masterpiece of Lovecraftian fright and abstract terror. His Gyo on the other hand is less substantial but viscerally one of the most disturbing comics I've read.

Vagabond is one of the most beautifully drawn comics. I also read Eiji Yoshikawa's Musashi and it was fun to see what was left out and what was changed. Not that that was what Vagabond was necessarily based on. In fact, it's come to a point that Musashi has reached Bruce Lee levels of legend and it's hard to say what is what. But I think Musashi (the novel) is supposed to be one of the definitive accounts of Miyamoto's life. It really is absolutely brilliant artwork and the intricate details in Takehiko Inoue's inking are incredible especially his backgrounds. I mean what other artist could make a rice paddy field so interesting? I think part of it is his switch to a pen brush. I have a DVD which shows him working on Vagabond and he talks about how after he switched it became more difficult to control but the unpredictability of the brush also gave his work a feeling of being alive. You can especially see it in the hair. I've only read a few manga start to finish. Akira and XENON, with intentions to read Lone Wolf And Cub start to finish. I've sampled plenty of Viz titles I bought for 50 cents each at this major closeout online, didn't really like any of them. I'll keep an eye on the thread though in case something looks good. On Tumblr I always see interesting looking horror manga images, but no clue what books they're from. Post 'em here. I'd love to try and identify them. The only manga I am currently reading is Takehiko Inoue's Vagabond which I highly recommend. I've been looking forward to adding something new to my pull list but I'm not sure what yet. Ideally I'd like something finite as not to have to follow another title with over 300 chapters. I'd also like to get around to reading Naoki Urasawa's Monster because I thoroughly enjoyed the anime. Hey, the library has Vagabound too. It's.... long. And it's not even done yet. But if you're willing to invest, I think it's worth it. To watch Musashi go from an unruly, violent kid to a composed and formidable swordsman only has the impact it does as it takes you through every step of the way. Although, not being able to finish the story might be a little annoying.

Hey, the library has Vagabound too. It's.... long. Yeah I've read over 320 chapters. That's mostly why I'm hesitant to pick up another title that runs as long. I think part of it is his switch to a pen brush. I have a DVD which shows him working on Vagabond and he talks about how after he switched it became more difficult to control but the unpredictability of the brush also gave his work a feeling of being alive. You can especially see it in the hair. What DVD is that? I would love to watch him draw.

Anyone here reading . Attack on Titan ? I thought the premise was really neat, but then I actually read the first one, and it seemed like a standard Zombie story, only with the Zombies giant. Wondering if that's the case or it's more than that.

Wondering if that's the case or it's more than that. There's more to it than that, but I stopped reading and need to catch up with the series again.

Wondering if that's the case or it's more than that. It's more than a zombie story, but I can't say much more than that as I think one of the big selling points for the book are the mysteries and questions it presents.

What else is on your reading list? I'm following: Yotsuba One Piece (but slowwwwly. I think I'm, like, 25 volumes behind.) Tezuka's stuff in general. Drifting Classroom (On and off.... slowwwwwwly)

I bought the first couple Attack on Titan volumes after reading a pretty glowing review. Could not keep the characters straight.
Death Note is probably my favorite manga.
I enjoy Naruto, but I'm way behind (I think I'm on volume 32).
I was reading Monster at work a couple years ago and thought I was enjoying it, but I got real busy one day and just never went back to it. I think I was about half way through at the time.
I started Uzumaki, but I'm only on the second chapter. Likewise with Lone Wolf & Cub.
Berserk and 20th Century Boys are probably the two things I'm most interested in reading next.

I like Deathnote quite a bit in the beginning... I don't remember exactly what, but something happened that really annoyed me around the 9th volume or so and I stopped reading.
I've read the first bunch of One Piece.. it's not bad.. I'd pick it up if I found it on sale or something.

Heh. I saw this thread, and I thought to myself "I'm going to pitch 20th Century Boys if no one's mentioned it yet, what a great series". And it's the first title mentioned in the thread! I'm actually only 13 volumes into it, though. I'm re-reading it now, it just so happens that it's one of the few manga titles our local smalltown library has in their collection.
On a completely different note, a series I've also been enjoying very much, is Black Cat. It's about these two bounty hunters, one of which is an ex-member of a crime syndicate who used to be known as the Black Cat. The premise may sound very similar to the anime Cowboy Bebop, but it's a notch more light-hearted, and the main character is a cross between Spike Spiegel and Goku (he's always thinking about food). It's set on Earth, either in the present day or a bit into the future, not sure which.

I liked Black Cat ok, but not nearly as much as Cowboy Bebop, which is one of my favorite anime's ever. (2nd only to Full Metal Alchemist).
Read the Vinland Saga (vol. 1) today... amazing art... story was a little slow, and a little generic but not bad...the art was the real highlight.. I'd definitely get the next one.

Stopped by a yard sale today and they had the first three volumes of Loveless for 50 cents each. No idea if the series is any good at all, but for that price, I figured why not. I looked through the first few pages and I thought the font they were using sucked on ice, but I haven't started really reading it yet.

Vinland Saga vol. 2.... pretty good. They're throwing in some King Arthur stuff (via the Welch), which is pretty fun...alot more characterization that the 1st one.. I'm not sure I wouldn't have got it right away if my daughter didn't want it, but I'm glad I did. Since vol. 3 just came out, I'll probably get than and be caught up. Happily they don't seem too big on cliffhangers, so hopefully I won't be annoyed in having to wait for the quarterly release after that
