I met both Aragones & Sakai at NYC conventions (the Penta Hotel across the street from Pennsylvania Station), and didn't have to wait in lines at all. Both very nice guys.

Evanier I never met. I often admired some of the things he'd say in THE JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR, but after awhile, I had the feeling he was being too egotistical in his statements. For about 10 whole years, I kept being patient with HIM, but the last few years of that, it seemed like every time we'd cross paths online, he'd go out of his way to contradict every single thing I would say on any given topic. After awhile, it became obvious it wasn't just about facts or opinions, it had become personal with him.
So I finally blocked him on FB so I wouldn't have to be annoyed any more.
It's definitely a case where I'd rather remember the work, not the person.

If memory serves, that was Sakai's first appearance in Charlotte. I'm not sure if Aragones had appeared there before but even so, it's been quite some time since he had (maybe 5 years or more?)
I think that may account some for the long lines I encountered that day which was a Saturday too which tends to be the busiest day of the weekend anyway.

I don't know what issue it was, but when I was in high school, I remember reading an issue of Groo (the Marvel Epic run) where Groo is trying to traverse a body of water on stilts, while piranha are nipping at him. Sitting alone in my room, I laughed out loud at this sequence. Great stuff.

I can't believe the series lasted 120 issues. Not because I thought it was bad - I never read it (I wasn't into humor or cartoon style comics) - I just never realized there was that much material.

MUCH more than 120 issues-- it was around before and after the Epic run from other publishers, always done by Sergio Aragones (with what's-his-name, heh, writing the dialogue).
I'd rather read GROO than CONAN.

There was a running joke at one point. Fans often liked to consider who would be good to play certain characters in films. In the case of GROO, one suggestion was Terry Jones from MONTY PYTHON. The joke was... how about Arnold Schwartzeneggar?

Groo is AMAZING.
A while ago, I picked up a big lot of about 75 Groo the Wanderer comics for a little under a buck each. I've been reading them recently and they're just fantastic. They remind me fondly of my youth when I was introduced to Tintin and Asterix. It complements my other swords and sorcery reading quite nicely (Conan, Head Lopper, Red Sonja, etc).
I wish that there were collected editions of the comics that aren't mostly out of print. I picked up reader copies and they're readable, but flimsy. There's so much history and fantastic work done here—Dark Horse should put out some reprints or library editions or something. I'll try to get as many of the old trade paperbacks as I can, but...

Has The early years been collected in trades?

Has The early years been collected in trades? Marvel did a few 4 issue trade collections, but sadly most Groo trades are either out of stock or difficult to find. There really hasn't been a definitive collection for our favorite mendicant and there really needs to be one ala Usagi Yojimbo Saga.

I remember reading an issue of Groo (the Marvel Epic run) where Groo is trying to traverse a body of water on stilts, while piranha are nipping at him. I just realized where else I've seen that joke before. It was a BUGS BUNNY cartoon about ancient Rome, and Yosemite Sam was trying to cross over a pit filled with lions, on stilts.
Bugs tossed a HACKSAW into the pit, and the lions were apparently smart enough to figure out how to use it...
