So I was a fan of this book back during my adolescence, had a huge stack of the Marvel issues, and enjoyed them quite a bit. When I got older and went through that phase where I decided I was too mature for some things (not realizing that this, in fact, was a symptom of immaturity ), I got rid of the collection on the basis that Groo is just one simple joke, repeated issue after issue. In hindsight, Aragones' artwork is genius and the true star of the series, regardless of whether or not you can predict a story's ending on the first page. Anyway, here's a thread for discussing Groo, Rufferto, and the quest for cheese dip!

I have an almost complete run of Groo from 1-120. I wasn't really a fan but my ex-wife loved the comic. I don't really remember much of the series.

I love Aragones' work in general, but I just don't get Groo at all. It's one of those things that people rave about, and I think, "Really?"

It's all pretty great. I think I never got most of the last third of the EPIC issues, though. Maybe Epic 20-60 was the sweet spot?
After Conan is done, there will be a 12 part series, each one focusing on different persons in the Grooverse.

I'd like to buy my nephew a Groo TPB for the holidays but I don't know where to begin.
Any recommendations?

Groo is a pretty consistent work throughout. There are no "bad" volumes I'm aware of, nor any "must read" volumes that you'd be a fool for missing.
That being said, I'd recommend The Groo Houndbook only because it introduces and heavily features Rufferto. In my opinion, he's the best part of Groo aside from Groo, himself.

As Shax said, Groo has been amazingly consistant and always reader-friendly in that you can pick up any issue and understand whats going on. No need to fret about where to begin

Groo #100 is excellent, but you probably need the context of the other stories for it to have real impact.

Groo #100 is excellent, but you probably need the context of the other stories for it to have real impact. I felt the same way about #35, in that it ran through pretty much the complete cast of supporting characters and their subplots in one hysterical story. I never read #100 though.

After reading Groo right from #1 of the Epic series, the story in #100 blew my mind as a kid, because it actually changed the status quo. In the story, Groo realizes the importance of education, so he learns how to read!
For the rest of the Epic series, his character was slightly different - while still an idiot, he wasn't quite as much of an idiot, and there were points where he actually thought things through a little thanks to his new source of knowledge.
Blew. My. Mind.

Blew. My. Mind. Blowing my mind right now. I've never read that far. I think the furthest I ever went was around the #70s.

The only Groo TPB I have is The Death Of Groo, which was actually an original graphic novel if I remember correctly. I agree with everyone else though, there is no wrong choice. It's all good. I really can't wait for it to be collected in a Library Edition type series of hardcovers, hopefully with remastered color and better paper.
