Written by Mark Waid. Art and Cover by Pete Woods. Archie & Betty finally finish his grandfathers 1969 Mustang. Reggie pushes Archie too far in front of Veronica. Reggie then challenges Archie to a race. However things don't go well when Betty tries to stop the race. Archie, Betty & Reggie crash & Betty & Reggie's cars go thru the guardrail... This issue was a fast read. It got right to the action. There was a little side plot involving the Blossoms but this was focused mainly on Archie, Betty & Reggie. Hard to judge this issue since it is part 1 of 3. 7/10.

Written by Ryan North and Ian Flynn. Art and Cover by Derek Charm. Everyone is getting ready for the Josie & the Pussycats concert...Jughead loses his ticket. Sabrina finds him & tries to help him out by using her magic. But she messes up & now Jughead is pursued by every female in Riverdale including Josie & the Pussycats. What a fun issue. It was great to see Sabrina again & Waid & Flynn throw in Josie too. What Archie & Reggie would think is a dream come true is a nightmare for Jughead. Fun issue. 8/10.

Written by Joshua Williamson. Art by Howard Porter. Cover by Jason Fabok. The Conclusion of the Button. Flash & Barry are caught behind Reverse-Flash running towards his death. They are caught in the energy backlash until someone rescues them...Jay Garrick comes out of the speed force long enough to return them to the Bat Cave. Then Jay gets pulled back in before Barry can pull him back. Bruce & Barry wonder what they saw out there in the energy force. The epilogue shows Dr Manhattan's arm & pulls back to focus on Superman's chest shield. To be continued in the Doomsday Clock. This was decent for a short crossover but like most events it leads into another event...Ugh! It was great to see Jay back as an older Flash. It was great to see a team up between Batman & Flash. Everything was good except for the ending. 7/10.

Written by Charles Soule. Art by Ron Garney. Cover by Mike Deodato. The Purple Children decide to reward DD for saving them from their father the Purple Man. Using their mental powers they make everyone forget that DD is Matt Murdock. DD realizes what has happened when Kirsten no longer remembers that he is Matt. Neither does Foggy. However Matt reveals his ID to Foggy & he remembers everything. But Matt hesitates with Kirsten & decides it would be better if she doesn't remember. Instead he breaks up with her & returns to NYC to restart his life. Soule has really found his voice on DD. I felt he had a rough start on this series but his last few arcs have been awesome. 9/10.

Written by Dan Abnett. Art by Scot Eaton and Wayne Faucher. Cover by Brad Walker and Andrew Hennessy. Atlantis waits for Arthur & Mera to return. All the prisoners have been set free. The Kingdom waits to depose Aquaman as King. They feel he has put the surface world ahead of his loyalties to Atlantis. It seems all of Atlantis feels the same way. The issue ends with Arthur telling Mera he will fight for the throne. OK we have seen this before. Aquaman being taken off the throne. But the way Abnett handles this makes it different. This has been slowly developing since the first issue of Rebirth. It makes sense & doesn't come out of left field. IMO Abnett has been one of the best writers in the DC Rebirth. 8/10.

Written by Michael McMillian. Art by Christian Duce. Cover by Brad Walker and Andrew Hennessy. A fill in by a new creative team before we jump into the Blockbuster arc. Actually it was pretty good. Nothing was mentioned that has been happening in previous issues or in Titans. Basically it is a "buddy" comic. Wally stops by because he is bored to hang out with Dick. And of course we get a throw away villain. A petty thief has some alien tech that allows him to manipulate time in a small area. wally & Dick capture him & have fun night out on the town. 7/10.

Written by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason. Art by Doug Mahnke and Jaime Mendoza. Cover by Ryan Sook. As all kinds of weird stuff happens all over Hamilton, Jon is forced to watch his parents in the middle of it on a TV screen. The big bad guy is revealed (it was leaked a week ago). He wants to brainwash Jon to turn against his parents to get revenge on Superman. This arc feels a little too drawn out & a bit darker than usual. However I am confident in a big payoff that will be coming. It's ironic that Mahnke is drawing this as he drew the villain's first appearance back in Action Comics #775. 8/10.

Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Art and Cover by Jorge Jimenez. The end of the first arc. Superboy & Robin get out of the trap that Kid Amazo put them in. How? Luthor rescues them. Anyway things wrap up OK with Luthor helping them. They return home to Jon's house only to find Lois & Alfred waiting for them. Busted! This is the perfect creative team for this title. Tomasi nails the boy's voices & makes it fun. Jimenez is really good at drawing pre teens. His style on the boys is more "fun" than his adults. This is a great title & a great addition to the World's Finest Team! 9/10.

Written by Tom King. Art and Cover by Mitch Gerads. I keep dropping this title then something like the Button pulls me back in. I was intrigued by this issue & a "team up" with Swamp Thing. First of all the artwork was superb. The issue started out awesome. Batman is pulled into a murder case. The victim is...Swamp Thing's father. The scene at Wayne Manor with Bruce, Alfred & Alec was perfect. I was so into the story that I was thinking King writes an awesome Swamp Thing. Then the last few pages sort of ruined it for me. Swamp Thing kills the murderer & just leaves. Batman is left behind stunned at what just happened. What just happened? The ending was just stupid & abrupt. Maybe someone else saw it differently & thought it was brilliant. 6/10.

It's been a while since I read Astro City regularly but I started buying it again last year and I have most of the last ten issues. I especially love the Jazzbaby issues. It has maintained the high quality I got used to back when I read Astro City in the 1990s. But, man, I loved #44! I really didn't expect THAT! I'm not going to say anything about it. I want you to be surprised too.

My thoughts on Superman #23: Lots happening in this issue which for me was a page turner! The Kents' neighbor's true nature revealed (he's up to no good), monsters invade Hamiltion, Superboy kidnapped, lots of fights. The scene where Superman is investigating the place where Robin and the others are held and then hears Lois in trouble--the way it is drawn where Superman realizes the danger and takes off was very well done. The art and panel layout change midway through the book when the monsters attack--the art becomes darker and murky, I guess to complement the sense of dread brought on by the monsters. Wasn't expecting the reveal of this arc's big bad and am looking forward to the wrap up--and hope Lois will be ok. For me, the book of the week. 10/10

thoughts on Archie #20 The new Riverdale really goes out of its way to depict Reggie as a cruel bully and jerk (where in the past he was more mischievous than truly hurtful). The Archie/Reggie feud explodes in this issue. I liked the way the issue began where Archie describes his relationship with Reggie. He even uses the word hate to sum it up. Betty being thrown into the mix was a surprise. Some of the dialog seemed off (the line about racing for pinks seemed more suited for the 50s) and in some panels Pete Woods's art is inconsistent. Some of the figures just have dots for facial features (if this had been drawn by Dan DeCarlo or Harry Lucey, you can bet the crowd at the drag race would have all been completely drawn as well as dressed in the fashions of the day). The last page left me wanting the next issue to hurry up!! 9/10

Wonder Woman 77 Meets the Bionic Woman #4: The love letter to these shows from the 70s continues as Wonder Woman brings Jaime to Paradise Island. Lots of very nice nods to the show with appearances by Rena (the Amazon with Diana when she finds Steve in the WW pilot), Druscilla (who asks if Diana has brought ice cream), Queen Hippolyta (looking like a cross between the 3 actresses who portrayed her), a Jayne Kennedy inspired Nubia, as well as an amazon who looks a lot like Christie Marston. The girl from Amadonna appears too. A casual fan may not catch all the references from the show, but for those of us who enjoyed the show this issue was a real treat. Jaime and Max the bionic dog are in awe of the island, especially the kangas. Diana and Jaime discuss their origins and how each of them has a Steve. The plot with stolen missiles and fembots continues as well as appearances by other characters from both shows. At this point the plot is wearing a bit thin, but for entertainment value, this issue hits the mark. 8/10

I also agree with you about the art. It felt a bit rushed toward the end of the issue. Maybe Woods had to rush the art since the story was switched from the initial one that was to run focusing on the Blossoms? As far as the pink slips - I always see the Archie universe as timeless pulling in all elements of the last 75 years of American pop culture.
