Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #8 Written by Julie and Shawna Benson Art by Roge Antonio Summary: The Birds of Prey team up with Dick Grayson to take on the shape shifting Gemini and track down the person supeing up metahumans. Plot: The high point for this series has always been the relationships between Batgirl, Huntress and Canary and the Benson sisters' skill at portraying the way these women's personalities interact really shines here. Case in point: the scene where they patch up Dick back at the Bell Tower. The way that Babs first intones "Am I interrupting something" when she walks in on Helena patching Dick up is teasing and the way that it's mirrored with mock shock when Canary walks in on Babs and Dick a page later makes it doubly funny. There's real heart here and it really shines against the action making for a fun read. Art: About the only negative I have artwise is that I wish there was a little variety in body types and facial expressions. With their different costumes, hair color and skin tones the Birds are easy enough to tell apart but in the scene at the end with Gemini and the Blackbird the use of the same body types and expressions became really evident as with two women wearing similar black costumes with pale skin and black hair I found it difficult to tell the two apart at times. Grade: 6.5/10

Jim Henson's Storyteller:Giants #4Written an Illustrated by Feifei Ruan Summary: In the final installment of of Giants we get a retelling of the ancient Arabic story The Fisherman and the Giant about a poor fishermen who finds a talking fish and frees an island from imprisonment. Plot: Ruan gives us a great parable about how working against your best interests to help others is worth it in the end. It's a fun fairy tale with fascinating characters and a world that is rich and engrossing. That said, although the story is fun, the Storyteller and his Dog are largely absent and that lack of interplay with the teller and the story and the audience made it an ill fit for the series. Art: The traditional Chinese art style used by Ruan is stunningly beautiful. The light pastel colors and the dark navies and blacks and stark whites create an arresting contrast that really makes you stop and study each individual image.
Grade:8/10

Wonder Woman #18: the story behind Wonder Woman's early adventures continues to impress. I enjoyed seeing Dr. Cyber and Veronica and how they play into Barbara Ann's story. The scenes with Veronica's daughter were genuinely creepy. The art is a bit of a let down after Scott's beautiful and lush pictures, but it's not bad. It reminds me art in an old school elementary school reading book. Evely's Wonder Woman looks boxy in some panels. it could be the bulkier skirt or armored bustier. I like the the Rebirth look, I just think Evely hasn't quite mastered it yet. Rucka has crafted an intricate, complex, yet readable and enjoyable story. 8/10

I forgot about Nancy Drew And The Hardy Boys: The Big Lie #1. If my store still has it, I want to check that one out! Always enjoyed their mystery books.

I should be liking Wonder Woman a lot more than I do, I suppose. Aside from Etta Candy (I think that a character named Etta Candy should have some of the characteristics that made Golden Age Etta Candy a great character), there isn't anything that bothers me, no bad dialogue, no stupid plotting, none of the things that make me dislike many modern comics. But I don't love it either. The writing is OK and there are sequences that keep me mildly interested. But it's not anywhere near good enough to justify how long and drawn out every storyline is. I don't look forward to every issue, I generally have forgotten what happened in the previous issue, and my overall feeling is that I should dress up as a medieval kuhniggit and wave my sword and yell "Get on with it!"
My favorite comic book this week was Batgirl and the Birds of Prey.
As for Detective #952, it was fun seeing Lady Shiva put Ras in his place. But SHEESH! when did Lady Shiva become the "Venture Brothers" parody of herself? I was on the verge of actually liking Detective Comic this month despite all of Clayface's best efforts to mess it up, but Lady Shiva's pretty much motiveless desire to kill everybody in Gotham is ridiculous.

Hellboy and the BPRD 1954: Ghost Moon #1 Written by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson Art by Brian Churilla Colored by Dave Stewart Summary: Hellboy, Archie and Susan head to British China to investigate a missing village and Hellboy fights Betaray Bill!(Only not really)
Plot: For the first time in my life I approached a Hellboy title with mild feeling of trepidation after the serious let down that was the Visitor from last month. Once again we see Mignola paired with an unknown artist which made me wonder what I'd get here but unlike last time I left feeling pretty good. The partnership between Archie, Hellboy and Susan is pretty well developed, the setting new and the threat of the souls made for a fun ride. That said, although its a vast improvement over the visitor it was a little middle of the road as there's no real personal hook for Hellboy giving it a kind of monster of the week feel.
Art: While Brian Churilla's more cartoony look isn't the best on the characters the setting under his pen really shines, China really comes alive and the scene with the dragon parade was amazing.
Grade:7/10 I thought this issue was pretty good, but now I'm kind of worried about The Visitor (I haven't read it yet).

Grade:7/10 I thought this issue was pretty good, but now I'm kind of worried about The Visitor (I haven't read it yet). the art on the visitor was decent enough but the plot was pretty pointless given that it consisted mainly of the alien just appearing in the back ground of Hellboys greatest hits. Very little new dialogue and no real insight into the alien made it just plain frustrating

I just got this today and I couldn't understand how Grayson survived the sword attack. The art made it look like it went deep into his back.

John Carter: The End #2
by Brian Wood + Alex Cox and Hayden Sherman
So if you like John Carter at all Id say have a go at this mate. Its not all boobs n butt like the recent Dejah Thoris books usually are, which is a major plus, as we get a gem of a story about Carter and Thoris returning after seeming decades away to find their society in ruins, their lost son returned, but not feeling the love. The art is great reminding me of Matteo Scalera's Black Science as well as a few other Image books whose names have run to the back of my head and hidden. Rating: 7/10

Written by Dan Abnett. Art and Cover by Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund. Bumblebee & the Fearsome Five! The Titans don't believe the Fearsome Five's story that are helping people like Mal & Karen Duncan. Nightwing & Flash break into their HQ Meta Solutions & investigate. Of course the FF are still villains & the stage is set for next issue's confrontation! Another great story with Abnett really nailing the interactions among the team. After the Wally centric first arc this story arc has really settled in on the rest of the team & on the dynamics & friendship of these heroes. I know some don't like Booth's art style but I think it is perfect on this title. One of the best Rebirth titles. 9/10.I was a little worried about having the focus be Bumblebee and Mal.. they aren't really 'my' Titans (I'm a Wolfman/Perez guy), and it smacks of forced diversity at first glance. Now that the story is going, it's really good.. the team is starting to feel like a team.. I like the Dick/Wally relationship... He's nailing Roy, and it's an interesting plot using old characters in new ways, which, IMO, is what Rebirth should be all about. I still think Lilith should be Raven, and I'm not sure what they're going for with Garth. but really hitting it's stride!
