Early in this story, when Usagi and Kato first meet, they silently size each other up and each realizes how formidable the other is. That must be why Usagi resorts to bribery to end the gang war. I wonder if Kato had not been there what Usagi's methods would have been.
In the later story "Return to Hell" we find out that Kato is enamored of Ayaka. There is no indication of that in this story unless you know to look for it. Just the fact that Kato spends so much time at the inn is a clue.
I wonder who reads Usagi's dialogue, when he mentions Kato's name, in Inspector Clouseau's voice versus the Green Hornet's. Clouseau for me; I never liked the Pink Panther movies, but my parents watched them so often when I was growing up that his voice is burned into my brain.

This is yet another play on Yojimbo, probably the most literal adaptation so far.
