I’m curious how many might consider remarriage if death separated your marriage. Or would you rather stay alone? I personally would rather have a shorter life if it meant me dying first. Funny you should ask that, as I have asked myself that. At this point, I'm not looking and just living life day by day; no expectations about the future. If I were to find out that I didn't have a lot of time left, it probably wouldn't bother me, so no fear of death, but no welcome of it. Just acceptance when it does come. Same for another relationship; not seeking one, not hiding from one. I was single quite a while before meeting Barb and am quite contented in my own company; but, also enjoyed having someone to come home to and talk to and share things with. If it happens, then great, if not, no regrets.

First time I’ve read about this, I found it interesting: A Trojan Hearse?

If my wife died, I'd definitely consider having other relationships if I wanted to. But I'd never marry again. That was a special one-off thing for a special one-off person.

I told my wife she's not allowed to die first, and looking at family histories of male and female relatives on both sides, she's not likely to.

We're the opposite - if I die first, she's in big trouble. She's disabled, and ordinary disability services don't do what she needs. Plus, she's ten years older than I am. Women tend to outlive men, but not by ten years. So we both expect me to be the surviving spouse.

I suspect I don’t have to worry. If she dodges breast cancer, which does run in her family, the rest of the women in her family tend to live into their late 80s and beyond. On the other hand it’s rare for men in my family to see 70.

Next month is the anniversary of my wife's biological mother's death. So we were talking about it this weekend. Her father remarried fairly quickly, less than a year, after her mother died and we were talking about that too. So we were talking about remarriage ourselves. I don't think I would want to. At least not actively try. But then my wife's maternal grandmother lived to 96, if I remember right, but her husband died of a heart attack in his mid 50's. My wife said that grandma only ever dated once after her husband died and so she spent the last 40 plus years of her life alone. Not sure if I could do that either.

I plan to be a merry widower. I'm open to the idea of marrying again some day, but not soon.

This applies to everyone, so it’s relatable, but what a month January is, eh, financially? My energy bill was 3 times higher than December. Rent went out on 28th. Landlord hinting at a rent rise next year. Council tax due tomorrow. And don’t get me started on tax returns… Please can the warm weather arrive quickly so I can switch my heating off. And please can I win the lottery this weekend…

I'm on a budget billing; but, my bill hasn't been too bad, this winter, despite the single digit temperatures of a couple of weeks ago. My thermostat is set at 68 and I just wear a sweatshirt around the house. The cats have fur and heated beds, so they are fine, plus the use me as a heat source, at night.
My rent rose significantly with my last lease, after being stable for e few years. I wasn't surprised, given COVID and the high rentals in the area. With two universities and two major corporate entities, rental prices for even lower end apartments are outrageous. My place is old, but relatively well maintained (my apartment has some cosmetic issues, here and there, from previous tenants) and spacious enough, especially after Barb's passing and it is just me and the cats. I have lived in efficiency apartments and a town house, before this and this is a good size, for me (especially since I downsized books and similar in the last move).
I have to file my income taxes, but I am waiting on an interest statement, for the one retirement account that my mother left me. I cashed in another, last year, to buy a new car, which is going to boost my taxable income, but, on my sister-in-law's advice, had them take out 20% withholding for taxes and should get some of that back. My usual refund is normally relatively low, as I prefer to have the money available during the year and have no dependents (since I can't claim the kitties). I've had to pay, a couple of times, but about $20, because of an error in my state withholding, at a previous company. I don't have anything that is subject to property tax (at present), in Illinois. When I lived in South Carolina, they levied property taxes on automobiles; but, I was there in the Navy and Illinois was my state of record, so I could only be taxed by Illinois, under the Soldier's And Sailor's Relief Act. That prevented states where you were stationed from hitting you for taxes, in addition to your home state, since you are there under orders and not choice. Illinois also didn't levy taxes on military pay, so I only paid Federal taxes, while on active duty.

Ugh, our power bill was obscene. Double the last one and more than 50% more than the usual. It's also enraging that the US makes you jump through hoops to calculate how much to pay in taxes under threat of penalty when they already know instead of just cutting a check or sending a bill for the difference of what was withheld.
But my snow shovel didn't break this time clearing the driveway, so that's nice. I'll take a winter silver lining. Or should I say, a shiny white pile lining.

Well, I had to; you see, I just inherited the mantle of The Phantom. It's a requirement on the contract. I didn't get the wolf, though, just a pair of ornery cats. No horse, either and the treasure was eaten up in Bangalla taxes. That's the problem of being Generation X, the first generation to be economically worse off than their parents. Turns out, that Ghost Who Walks thing is literal, without the horse.

This may be fairly random, but I just want to stop for a moment and thank all of the admins, mods, members and guests that got this place going and have kept it running. I am prone to random bouts of nostalgia and emotions as I've gotten older and had kids, and I am really glad there is a place online that ticks so many boxes for me.
Comic books and related media Music Random crap Pedantic deep dives and arguments on obscure details The most civil group on the internet despite the occasional (relatively VERY MILD) spat Keeping the classic internet forum mode of communication going
Just generally, I appreciate this place and I am glad it's here, even if they occasionally allow Liefeld apologetics. That's all.
