This cartoon was published earlier this year, but I just saw it now... sums up our shared experiences at one point, hopefully good for a laff... It's a good thing that this was done by Phil Hands, instead of Phil Foglio... otherwise all the characters would be topless... or worse.

My sister and I are getting together tomorrow to start the process of moving our mom out of the house she shares with our dad. He has become far more aggressive toward her recently, verbally and psychologically abusing her and threatening her with physical violence, and we have reached the point where we can't let it continue. She has experienced some cognitive loss over the past six months, and as she isn't able to cater to him like she used to, he is frustrated that things have changed and is taking it out on her. He's a drunk (alcoholics go to meetings), which isn't an excuse but rather an explanation; the worst thing is, he was fine for two months when he couldn't get out to get booze, but as soon as our state stores opened back up, he was back in the bottle and back to being a jackass.
I'm so worn right now. That situation has been a huge burden on my mind, my role as Treasurer for our swim club is extra busy right now as we just opened for the season, and I was serving on the Session of our church, which I just resigned from last week because I don't feel connected with that church any more (not a faith issue, but a church body issue). Mentally I am broken, and physically I am exhausted as I am not sleeping more than 5 or so hours per night and then having to work 8 hours a day and put in more hours for my "leisure" activities afterward. I'm overwhelmed with everything going on in the news, to the point I want to just scream at the world to get its shit together, because I can't take anymore right now.
Sorry for vomiting all of this out here. This has possibly been the longest year of my life, and it isn't even halfway over yet.

Nobody ever tells you not to have parents. I have earplugs in a lot and I learned to have white noise (fans are good) and block the light out of the bedroom at night. I feel blessed to have a back porch with some sun sometimes and squirrels, deer and little birds to share it with, I can get all John Denver close to almost heaven for a few minutes sometimes and it balances from the stressful times. I can't change other people, only they can do that, I just try to stay out of the direct path their boards (or bottles) are aimed at. Taking care of yourself The Captain is taking care of others. I could shoot a television set sometimes though. I wonder if Elvis ever... oh yeah, I guess he did.

It's a terrible situation, The Captain; my heart goes out to you. I'm sure that it's greatly comforting for your mom, in these times of trial, to have you and your sister stand by her and assure her that she is loved. You're good people, my friend.

Oof, sorry to hear about your parents, The Captain and the stress from both burnout and the state of the world is no joke. There's nothing with taking a step back from everything to rest and recover. These are tough times and you have a lot on your plate. Don't forget to take care of yourself along with everyone else.

Thanks all! It's times like this that prove what an incredible community this is.
We visited the facility this morning. They will have a one-bedroom apartment available in early July, so we just need to get our mom down there to sign the paperwork and then start the process of getting her belongings out of the house. My sister ran into some folks from our parents' church who are residents there, so our mom would know some people going in. What a blessing!
As well, my wife has been my rock through all of this. She is supportive and there for me when I need it, and she backs off and gives me space when what I need is to take a nap, read some comics or just watch reruns of "Community". I could not get through life without her; she is simply an amazing woman.

Sorry to hear of the issues you face in your family Captain. And the state of the world right now isn't helping anyone alleviate stress. I hope for the best for your mother and that see can find some peace herself.

The Captain it is tough watching our parents age and them needing our help. May you have the strength to do all you can. And the wisdom to make the right choices.

Let me say it: Arizona (and by association that means most states and countries) people are STUUUUUUUUUUPIIIIIIIID! 3 weeks into the Covid Self Isolation's restrictions lifted and folks believe the pandemic is over? 30% increase of positive cases in 3 weeks. Arizona now just under 30,000 TOTAL cases. Hospitals all maxed out in the PCU beds available and working on plans for how to convert other units for Covid care. 27% of new cases when questioned and reviewing show THEY DID NOT WEAR MASKS. All across Phoenix when I am out it seems like more than 1/2 of the public is out in large groups WITHOUT MASKS.
Everything has now focused upon the George Floyd death to the point people have totally forgotten that Covid is still here and still killing. Please folks, keep your MASKS ON and BE SAFE! Allow you and your families further protection and stay home as much as you can with only necessary excursions out for groceries. Stop taking your bus load of kids unprotected into stores where the risk is going to be highest. Don't go out to the lakes or rivers where you DO NOT WHO is positive or negative and are more likely to end up being exposed from some idiot who has Covid and either doesn't know it or doesn't care. Far better to err on the side of overprotective than to not protect at all.
Like they would always repeat on Hill Street Blues: LET'S BE SAFE OUT THERE...
