Probably a good thing that there isn't a politics thread today. Agreed. That's a thought I've had pretty much on a daily basis for a year, too! Just the last year? Otherwise, I'm pretty show I know which piece of news from yesterday triggered Slam to make that observation, and if I'm right - yeah, oof.

It's not just one piece. But the biggie was an individual from my profession essentially telling the Supremes that "the President is above the law."

It's never just one piece, not since about 8 years ago at least. And yeah, that's the one I was thinking of (I figured that every lawyer with a functioning moral compass would be pulling their hair out over that).

This sums up my reaction pretty much every time there was breaking news from around 2015 - 2021. (Spoiler tags for adult language) {Spoiler}{Spoiler: Click to show} Since then, it's been a more low-grade persistent sense of disappointment, but it is unfortunately becoming relevant again.

NPR used to play some of the BBC late at night.

I get more news from Youtube postings of Have I Got News For You, when it is in-season. Tiny Rishi Sunak jokes never get old.

On a different note, I really miss having a manual transmission when the traffic light turns green. It seems like forever to get into second gear, in my relatively new car (year and a half old). Just because the younger generation can't manage a clutch, they take a manual option away from most models. Ugh!! That, and I need to disable about 2/3 of the "idiot driver" features. My favorite is the warning that "Ice is possible" when the temperature drops below 40 degrees F. Really? Thank you car computer, for explaining the thermodynamics of water to me. I had no idea, having lived in the Midwest for over 50 years. Why don't they teach that to us in schools? That and the "Lead vehicle has moved away" notice. Yes, I can see that; but, I am still waiting on the cashier to ring up my order and return my card to me, ya cyber-jerk! Why don't you give me a useful warning, like the driver coming from the other direction has just come from the marijuana dispensary, next door to my workplace. That way, I can give them an even wider berth. You know, I supported the legalization of marijuana in Illinois, until I had to work last Saturday and had to listen to the thumping noise of some band, while stoners picked up ganja, because the date was 4/20. You know, I don't deal with religious fanatics or Stone Cold fans, on March 16.

It's hard to find a news program here that's balanced on both sides and tries not to inform the viewer's opinion, rather letting events speak for themselves. PBS News Hour is good, though I honestly miss Al Jazeera America, it was my favorite

I used to watch the news. Now I just watch cute kitten videos on YouTube. I'm much happier these days.

Interesting that you chose to post the BBC News indent there. Do many if you Americans get your news from the BBC? Rather than watch a specific news station, I use aggregators and see a wider selection of articles from different sources. It so happened that a lot of the news articles were published by BBC at that time, enough so that someone made that meme of their indent, and it was immediately recognizable. Personally, I liked BBC's articles as they were not so close to the American circus and tended to be more objective and less editorialistic of the various happenings. As you can imagine, a lot of our news stations were more heated/slanted. I generally prefer to get my actual news from AP or someone like BBC. More news/less opinion. Also the amount of times in that period my heart dropped seeing that BBC News indent with Breaking News! knowing I was about to read something that would cause anger and/or despair, lol. I saw that meme and laughed heartily and deeply as it's like it was made from my own mind. I try to take in MUCH less news now. When Elon took over Twitter/X and they lost their absolute mind, I took the opportunity to dump it and not look back. My stress has gone down considerably since then.

I’m going to be the pebble in your shoe and say as much as everyone professes to not want a political thread again ….

Here in the UK, Aldi and Lidl are budget supermarkets. Major supermarkets are Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, and Asda. I use whichever one suits me.
I am amused by the fact that, in recent times, the major supermarkets are listing their budget competitors’ prices on their website. I’m doing an online shop with Sainsbury’s, and I need to buy some Hovis white bread. They are promising to match the price (£1.39) of Aldi.
You know, budget supermarkets must be loving the fact that their major competitors are giving them so much free advertising. If I was the CEO of either Aldi or Lidl, I would be thanking my lucky stars that the prices of my products are being plastered all over my competitors’ websites. Such a policy must - surely? - be directing some traffic to the smaller supermarkets.

I’m going to be the pebble in your shoe and say as much as everyone professes to not want a political thread again …. I think it's less nobody is ever tempted to discuss it but more that we realize it's probably for the best it's not an option here. Here in the UK, Aldi and Lidl are budget supermarkets. Some of their generic of brand items were questionable, but there's no reason to pay 400% markup on all-purpose flour, sugar, etc. They were also hard to beat on organic items, too.

I have a preference for some branded stuff, e.g. I like Hovis bread, and Diet Coke. But I am absolutely happy with generic, non-branded cereals, biscuits, orange juice, etc. A non-branded, generic orange juice tastes just as nice as a branded one that is double the price.
