I don't consider myself a "collector" looking for a return on investment; that's more of an investor IMO. I'm a reader first, who saves what I read, so I guess I'm a collector, but, I've never paid big $$ for an issue. The most I've ever paid for any single comic was $ 32 for an early Claremont X-Men back in the early 80's from Mile High's mail order. I ordered FN and got G but that's another story...  Long gone are the days of me paying anywhere near that, or even full retail for new issues, which I rarely buy new, though I'm getting ready to buy almost new at Comixology after they knock $ 1 off after a month or 2 (Valiant, Superman family). So, CCFers, I know some of you have paid big $$. What are your stories ? What I will pay some coin on is original art. I don't have much, but that I'm willing to pay a little for. I think the most I've paid is $ 500 and I think it was a Carmine Infantino Flash sketch. Someday I'll find it and post it here. |

The most I paid for a single issue was $50 for Iron Man #1. I, like you, am a reader first (though I guess I'm a collector too). I've rarely paid more that $10 for a single issue of anything (perhaps a couple other earlier IM books)

For a back issue? $5.00 for a B and B 86 that I had lost. It was originally ten bucks, but the store was having a half-price sale.

I like to make sure my collecting takes as little money away from me as possible. That being said, I grew up in the 90s so buying comics then did not interest to me. Ebay and back issues were my go to and, growing up, I routinely had to shell out $1-3 for older books that I felt like only I cared about.
Now, I buy and sell to help fund my collection. I buy stuff that, sure it would be nice to keep and have but I would rather make a profit and make some money towards a books I really want. It is why, as much as I cannot stand them, I keep up on which newer comics and variants are worth something. This past year is marking the first time I am tracking all spending and, at this point I have purchased around 100-150 new books. There are some good quality books in that bunch too, and because I am mindful and do some selling, I end up with some solid books at an average cost of only $4-6 per issue.
Enough rambling though...most I spent on one book was about $150 Canadian for Amazing Spider-Man #121. It came with a figure and was a high grade copy so I was very pleased!

$16 for the Green Lantern/Green Arrow issue where Speedy is revealed to be a heroin addict. I was in jr high and I wanted that comic so badly, haha! It was probably in the mid 80s and the store had a lay-a-way policy. I paid $2 weekly until I paid it off. Quite a sense of accomplishment back then!

$40 in 1994/95 for a Silver Surfer Vol #15 for which I'd give a low FN grade. Though I'm not expert. It's still older than me and in better shape than me.

$50 for Two-Fisted Tales #35 + Vault of Horror #40, so $25 for a comic.
The most I've ever paid out of pocket for original art was $150 for a Craig Crime SuspenStories page. I paid $250 (I think) for a large pencil drawing of Annie Fannie by Kurtzman, but sold some art to cover the cost; ditto $400 (I think) for a Coop original for a Mono Men album cover.

I always hated the idea of paying a lot more than cover price for a comic; so, I was never into buying a lot of back issues. IIRC, the most I paid for an individual comic was around $6 for a Robotech comic in the '90's - and, that was cover price.

To preface, I had a period in my life where I was a young professional earning good money with no children and few expenses, so I bought all my key issues then. There are maybe 8 books I spent $100 or more on. I do not spend like this anymore. Back in 2008, I purchased More Fun Comics #60 for $550. A unique opportunity presented itself, I had the right connections, and it was then or never. This book is so rare that it's practically priceless. Go ahead and try to find a copy. I'd been wanting a Bernard Baily Spectre cover for ages because I love the Spectre and I loved that anthology series (Spectre, Dr. Fate, Aquaman, and Green Arrow ALL in one volume!), and this was always my second favorite (the first, More Fun Comics #54, will forever be out of my price range), even if it predated the addition of those other great characters.  It's not the most cherished book in my collection, but it is the most exceptionally rare and it's a book I'm still thrilled to own and be able to open and read whenever I want to. No one saved More Fun Comics back in the day. Assembling a run is nearly impossible and would require a small fortune. |

I've spent $100 or more on six books in my life, the highest being $185 for a VF- copy of X-Men #94. There are three high-grade key issues of Captain America on that list (#'s 100, 110, and 117), as well as my oldest book (X-Men #10) and a high-grade Ghost Rider #1.

I think $220 for a VF+ copy of Amazing Spider-Man #129 around 7-8 years ago.
Just because of Frank's first appearance. Had to have it.
Otherwise, I doubt I've ever spent more than maybe $10-12 for a single issue.

Green Lantern #16Paid $20 (include tax) for this issue back in late 1990's and now it's worth around $75.00. Found this comic book in the $10 to $25 dollar bins and those books in those bins has tax included in the price so you can pay them by cash sale only.  First Adventure with Star Sapphire ...
