"Guilty"? Marvel have never rebooted their continuity, and I'm a bit baffled as to why renumbering is apparently a crime... Marvel has never officially rebooted but their current writers rarely acknowledge stories prior to the latest event so IMO they sort of do a reboot by ignoring past stories every few years.
And renumbering IMO is a crappy marketing method to boost sales short term. I'm old school. I like series with big #'s & a sense of longevity. If they want to do this then at least do it annually & put volume #'s in the books.
Continuous numbering is a weird conceit that is almost unique in publishing to comic books.

Continuous numbering is a weird conceit that is almost unique in publishing to comic books. Yes it is! Another reason I like it! It is unique! Like exclamation points at the end of every sentence!
Seriously I do think it is cool because it is unique. Part of my irritation is the reason - always looking at short term sales instead of the longer term view.

I'll give it some more thought before voting but it would be hard to convince me that Marvel's fairly poor showing during the Golden Age doesn't effectively cripple them in a poll such as this. Captain America, The Sub Mariner, and The Human Torch don't really stand up to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, nor does The Whizzer, Miss America, and Marvel Boy hold much of a candle to Green Arrow, The Flash, and The Spectre.
Something to consider though - does DC get credit for characters they own retroactively? Sure they've owned Captain Marvel since the 1960's but that's only because they pressured Fawcett into leaving the business in the 1950's. Does DC get retroactive credit for all the great stuff Fawcett did as their 'History of DC' books would like us to believe or do they lose points for their role in depriving us of great Marvel Family stories after 1951? What about Plastic Man? MAD? That MAD parody of Plastic Man? My thoughts? It is both good & bad. Bad that DC sued Fawcett & they had to stop Capt Marvel comics. Good that DC at least brought the character back 20 years later & therefore kept the character in print instead of limbo (like other Golden Age heroes - Black Terror, etc). Bad that they wasted the potential of the character. As far as Plastic Man - good that he would have faded away. Plas is unique - outside of his creator I don't know that anyone has done right by the character.

Marvel. No question for me.
There are things I like a lot that have come out of DC for sure, like Bronze Age Batman comics, Watchmen, Jonah Hex, the first two Christopher Reeve Superman movies to name a few. But man-oh-man, there are countless things that I love that have come out of The House of Ideas. I'm a Marvel guy through and through, I'm afraid.

I voted for Marvel. The characters were people with flaws and a shared universe from the start and that drew me in. But I will say that DC has the greatest Superhero of all time in Superman.

DC AND Marvel...AND Image AND IDW AND Titan AND BOOM! AND Dynamite AND Gold Key AND Dark Horse...
I refuse to submit to the sports team mentality that grade schoolers try to impose on each other. I've also always liked both Star Trek and Star Wars.
Obviously as a Superman fanboy I have more DC than Marvel, but just because they happen to have my personal fave, not because of any red team/blue team silliness.

I like comic books period. I also like both Star Trek & Star Wars....but I like DC a little more than the rest & I like Star Trek more than other Sci Fi series.

While I feel like asking me to pick is like my kids asking me who is their favorite, I'd have to pick Marvel. They Marvel Universe is simply a deeper, richer, more complex place.

The point of this is quite the opposite of choosing an allegiance and clinging to it like a "grade schooler." It's to critically evaluate the output of both companies as a whole, putting aside personal preferences and attempting to be objective. A nearly insurmountable task (Intentionally so) designed to provoke good discussion.

Sad to say due to the last approx decade of mishandling of DC comics and to a lesser extent their films, I actually had to deliberate this. Prior to nu52 it was a no brainier for me. DC easy. But since then marvel comics has win me over big time and their catalog of winning movies makes it a close race now. However, looking back over my whole life and thinking "big picture", I still say DC. Ultimately I'm still more familiar with, and more attached and attracted to more of what DC has and is than marvel. Their a bigger better fit for me.

A lot of Marvel's current writers are fairly regularly referencing stories from decades ago, in fact. Read Hellcat, Scarlet Witch or Howard The Duck and you'll see what I mean.

Does DC include stuff like Vertigo or are we talking the main "brand" of just DC? For me atleast it makes a huge difference.
