My wife and I got a very rare date night to ourselves tonight and decided to see Star Trek Beyond. 30 minutes into the film (the moment where the ship gets utterly annihilated), the projector broke down and we were given comp tickets to come back some other time.
It's a major effort for us to get out to the theaters, so we were understandably disappointed, but, to be honest, I wasn't enjoying the film. Too much action with absolutely no plot to speak of and only the most surface of internal conflicts for Kirk.
So my question to anyone who's seen this film is -- is it worth going back to see the rest? Does the film get better? Is a rewarding plot and conflict still coming? Or is this film 95% mindless action throughout?

It is definitely an action movie, yes. What distinguishes it from many other similar SF action films is the interplay between the classic Trek characters, which I thought was extremely well handled; the film managed to catch the blend of humour, friendship and mutual respect that characterized the original series.
I give the film full marks for its visuals, too; we see things in there that we hadn't seen before even in a CGI-crazy Hollywood.
There is a revelation at the end that gives the film a little more depth and suddenly makes the plot sensible, but in the final analysis it is an action movie. (Fast and furious in space, right?)

Well . . . I saw it yesterday, and liked it a lot more than I'd expected to. It's the first nuTrek film to feel like Trek to me. But it is primarily an action flick. There are scenes between Kirk and McCoy, and Spock and McCoy, which feel familiar and right. But having had a few hours to digest it all, they're superficial. It's nice to see Bones acting as friend/confidant to Kirk, but it doesn't affect anything. And it's nice to see Spock and McCoy exploring their relationship, but since we haven't seen that much bickering between these versions of the characters, that scene mostly played on our memories of the originals, and didn't add anything new. Plus, the bit about the Spock/Uhura relationship being strained/resolved was barely there. Both Kirk's and Spock's life-changing decisions were resolved too casually. And the villain's motivations were cloudy at best until the end, when they felt contrived. There was potential there, with aliens who feel the Federation is a bad idea; they could've paralleled the way many folk view the US these days. But no. And the new female character didn't make much of an impression.
But at least it did feel like these could be (versions of) the classic characters. And there are a couple of lovely scenes with just Spock, acknowledging the passing of Nimoy. And the alien landscapes were cool. And the attack on the Enterprise was different and impressive, if way too kinetic.
If you're more interested in character arcs or a plot that makes sense or makes you think, then yeah, you could wait for the DVD. It's popcorn Star Trek. Fun while you're watching it, with scenes that are cooler on the big screen, but when you start to think about it . . .

Sorry that it happened. I know how hard it can be just to schedule the time, and then you can't even see it.
I fully agree with RR above. It is primarily an action film, but they pair off different combinations of the main crew than usual which brings out more characterization from them. Can't guarantee you'll end up liking all of it, of course, but I think it's worthwhile going back and seeing the rest of it.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Sounds like a film I don't need to finish. I agree with RR that the CG was damn impressive, but action and effects aren't what I crave in a film. I think this comment put it all in perspective for me: but since we haven't seen that much bickering between these versions of the characters, that scene mostly played on our memories of the originals, We're now three films into this series, and they're still depending upon nostalgia to carry the human interest component. I mean...how has this franchise not managed to grow into its own yet? Even the original Star Trek III was a very different entity from the original television series that wasn't depending upon the past to carry it forward. I really enjoyed the second film, even with its severe logic lapses and embarrassing nod to Wrath of Khan, because it was about something and had plot/characterization at the center. Now it seems like we're back to the frenetic energy and mindlessness of the first film. I just have no interest in that.

I've liked them all.
Yes, this was heavily action-oriented, but it wasn't mindless.
It had me on the edge of my seat.
In fact, I understood in a twisted way, what the villain's motivation was, and thought it was very Trek-ish in the philosophical viewpoint.
It didn't necessarily feel like a new iteration, but a fresh coat of paint on the classic, which most of us have really liked.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I'd see it again.

It has good action and dazzling special effects and a okay script that was slightly better than average. I liked pretty much all the actors and actresses and none of them really shined the most. It was wonderfully staged, good drama, nice sequence of events, and has some few surprises now and then. Very suspenseful, riveting, and focused on the dynamics of all the characters that did their job surprisingly good a B- Grade.
I don't mind seeing it again ...

It's my favourite of the reboot films. What made it your favorite? While it glossed over the science (Star Trek is rarely anything approaching hard sci-fi), it doesn't have flat out bad science (like not understanding how super novas work). It focused more on character, had nods to TOS movies rather than blatantly ripping one off (KHAAANNN!!), delves into what makes the Federation great, had a really cool space station with a novel design...it just felt the most Star Trek.

I know I'm late, I'm sorry. I'm sorry that happened, Shax. I can't really be a good judge of whether or not it gets better. I mean, I've seen all three new Treks and have watched all the originals. It's been awhile, though. I do like the new ones, even though they're not very..Trek-y in my opinion. I'm sorry if I offend, but I've always felt Star Wars should be action and fighting. Political to an extent. Wars-y, maybe? While Star Trek should be, oh, I don't know, adventurous and exploring...Trek-y, perhaps? I can say that like dupersuper, this one is my favorite. For all the reasons he stated, and let me add that there's a certain character I adored. I won't say who yet, because I don't know if you've seen the rest yet.
If you have, what did you end up thinking?
