My wife and I are going to have a week off in September together. We'd like to go somewhere nice in the USA, does anyone have a suggestion what place is nice to visit? We live in NYC and we've been to Florida before. Has anyone been to Dollyland?

My nephew has been in Dollywood about eight years ago and the prices for admission is very reasonable and it's about the same size as Disneyland; but slightly smaller and it's a pretty fun place to go and you can go there for three days and be done with. It's doesn't have whole lot of rides like Disneyland but it's has many different things to do. It's has a western theme similar to Knotts Berry Farm with a country twist. Dollywood

We're in Oklahoma, but about 6 years or so ago Susan and I went to Maine and loved it. We're going back sometime, but I'd highly recommend it. The people were great and it was beautiful. We spent 3 days in Bar Harbor and fell in love with it.
Another thing is that there's hardly any big chains up there. Everything is local like things used to be. It's nice seeing locals supporting their own.

Anyone else know of a cool place to go in the USA ? What do you think you would like to do? Spend time in another cosmopolitan or maybe explore a national park? A theme park like Disneyworld maybe? (that's where I want to go to) Vegas is always a popular place of course. I do like the city of Nevada personally. At least the time I've spent there. Salt Lake City was cool, but I don't think there is anything huge in terms of attractions other than watching the Utah Jazz play. I'm probably wrong on that. Maybe you want to try food? I think it would be cool to go somewhere like Kansas City, St.Louis, Nashville, or Memphis to get a nice taste of that midwest/southern food culture. There is always the bay area with loads of things to do. You already heard my thoughts on San Francisco, but it's still a nice place to visit. Just not so great to live unless you have the monies :/

As others have said, a lot depends on what you like to do.
September is too early for skiing, but you might see the leaves start to turn in Maine or Vermont.
Closer to your home, I've enjoyed my visits to Cape May NJ.
Washington DC has the Smithsonian and other attractions.
You could go sailing on Chesapeake Bay.
Wait, you're a musician - go to New Orleans! Take your trombone and sit in with a brass band or two.

Busch Gardens Tampa is an amazing park (more about the animals than the rides, tho they do have some big rides), and it's open year round. there's also a combo ticket you can get that gives you admission to SeaWorld Orlando (only an hour away). as well as St. Petersburg (45 minutes away) with the Chihuly Museum and the Dali Museum. as well as Weeki Wachee (an hour away) with the famous mermaids show. and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel/Casino (great food). we just got back from a week based out of Tampa and LOVED it.

Anyone else know of a cool place to go in the USA ? and not good for your September trip (the parks are all off season). . but file it away: a couple of years ago, we flew into Pittsburgh, rented a car, and drove across Pennsylvania, ending in Philly (to do Liberty Bell, the Rocky Steps/Museum, Rodan Museum (they have a cast of 'gates of hell' and "the Thinker"), the Franklin institute (science!) and all the other historical stuff. along the drive, we stopped a day (or two) at each of these: Kennywood: classic theme park outside of Pittsburgh, with tons of "rescued" rides from the 50's and 60's (they have several "last of it's type in the USA" rides) as well as modern thrill coasters/rides. HersheyPark: chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, and tons of top class thrill rides. Good food at the Hershey Lodge, make your own candy bar at Chocolate World, and a trolly tour of downtown Hershey. Knoebel's: a "carnival" type park, in the middle of the mountains. . gorgeous scenery, two world class (really, always make the top 10 lists) wooden coasters in Phoenix & Twister, and an opportunity to play Fascination (fun!) with incredible food, free parking, several museums (Miners, Carousel, Knoebel's) on site, and a carousel that you can actually grab the brass ring on! (and you can either do all day ride wristband, or by ticket for rides). One of my favorite parks in the USA. Dorney - in Allentown (about an hour from Philly). Modern park with some great thrill coasters, lots of flat rides, and a great waterpark.

One of my favorite places I have ever visited is Sante Fe, NM.
Great authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex food. Lots of interesting things to do and see from the Sante Fe Opera (the view from the open air amphitheatre at sunset is to die for), to shopping, to sightseeing (everything form Ghost Ranch National Park and the Sante Fe Cathedral to desert hikes and Native American sites, museums, wonderful architecture that throws back to the the Mexican and old west feels, rich cultural mixes, etc. Four Corners is only s short drive away as well. I only had a few days to visit (I was staying in Abiquiu and only hit Sante Fe for a weekend), but it's a place I ahve always wanted to go back to to explore.

The wife and I settled on Maine. Any suggestions on where to go ? I have been in Maine a couple of times and I would like to go to these places: Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, Bangor. Bar Harbor, and Camden too. You can easily go to these places for a week and never run out of things to do.
