"Rob Liefeld draws feet!!!" From his upcoming Deadpool graphic novel (yes, he's an author now...).

My Weltanschauung has just been radically altered. (But I can't help notice that the feet we see here are drawn exactly the same way... Is it something drawn by someone else and cut-and-pasted, I wonder? )

I thought I heard the fabric of space and time being rent in two.

Not bad at all ... step up from previous works that he did previously!

Am I the only one who thinks it's ridiculous Liefeld gets any credit for Deadpool?

Am I the only one who thinks it's ridiculous Liefeld gets any credit for Deadpool? I think it's ridiculous that anyone gets any credit for Deadpool. On the whole, blame would be more appropriate...

So, I am well versed to the amount of disdain Liefeld's art gets on these boards. I used to be one of them! But as I've since realized, tastes do tend to change over time, as I have since warmed up to Liefeld. It began when I was reading the entire run of New Mutants #1-100. Towards the end of the run it began to get stale. Liefeld took over, and those early issues he drew at the end of the run not only made it a hot comic, but also sparked an entire phenomenon of the kind of style we would see in the 90's. I know what some of you may say, that 90's style sucked. I understand entirely. But there was a period in the early 90's where a lot of readers loved it (the reason these comics sold out right?), and well...I now see nostalgia in the 90's style, inparticularly in Liefeld's style of art. Although not Liefeld, I recently read the entire Age of Apocalypse run for the first time. Amazing story, and the art is fantastic. I had previously avoided reading this arc because I had previously stuck my nose up at 90's comics. I'm so glad I gave them another chance! Sure, Liefeld may be known for his weird (or lack thereof) anatomy choices, etc. I would also say that Jack Kirby was known for some of that too. Not comparing the two, as Kirby's on a whole other level no doubt. Just saying that over time, there is a bit of nostalgia to the first appearance of Deadpool, etc. Also, I like Cable and Deadpool and I like how Liefeld draws these characters. I'll likely pick up this book.

But as I've since realized, tastes do tend to change over time, as I have since warmed up to Liefeld. Actually, I used to be a fan of Liefeld! Yes, I kid you not! I thought his early work on What if..? brimmed with youthful enthusiasm and sheer fun! Later I grew progressively more disenchanted. Backgrounds were quasi inexistent, and storytelling was sacrificed in favour of lots of posing and close-ups of clenched teeth. The matter of fragile ankles, huge shoulder pads and minuscule heads also came to the fore. Still, even if I didn't like Rob's art anymore, I admired his chutzpah in going for people like Alan Moore to write his Awesome! entertainment books. As for the above pictures, they're quite all right. Still next to no background and a lot of posing, but at least we can tell what's happening.

I thought this was about CNN finally finding that missing Malaysian airliner.

It's weird, I feel like Liefeld is a guy that is not supposed to be an artist. You know what I'm saying? He's almost like an illusionist in a sense. I feel like he wings it a lot, especially in his earlier work. Whereas some artists evolve over time, Liefeld hit a ceiling. The most annoying aspect to him for me was the lack of creativity in his own books. Youngblood for instance, every character in that was blatantly copied from characters out of Marvel and DC. He even copied his own characters he created for Marvel. Couldn't stand that, but that was almost 25 years ago now. I may never forgive him.

I always admired the passion and enthusiasm Rob had for his work and for comics in general, and I liked the energy in his work when I first saw it when he was breaking in. There were some fun comics in that bunch of early stuff for Marvel and DC. He reminded me of nothing so much as that 8 year old who loves super-hero comics and spends his time making his own cheap knockoffs of iconic characters earnestly filling page after page of drawings doing his very best to make everything look cool and putting his 8 year old spin on how things should look and what makes cool comics. I did it when I was a kid. I am sure some of you all did the same thing. The problem was, Rob's skills as an artist never seemed to evolve beyond those of the enthusiastic 8 year old. And when he got his hands on his own company he put out a lot of books featuring those cheap 8 year old conceived knock-off characters. But he made it work, and made a career out of it, so you give him that.

Agreed on the passion and enthusiasm bit. I was in YHAPA, the Young Heroes APA*, when Liefeld was a member, before he broke into the pros. He ran preliminary sketches and sample pages of an early version of Youngblood through. IIRC, they were all different characters; none of them made it to the Image version. And they were all X-Men/Titans knockoffs. But he was having a great time, doing the kind of comics he was a fan of. (of which he was a fan.) I'm still not a big fan of his work, but you gotta give him credit for making a pretty good living doing stuff he loves.
*If you don't know what an APA was, go ahead and google it. After you get off my lawn.
