Published: June thru July 2003 Synopsis: Usagi and the sorcerer Sasuke attempt to rescue young Jotaro and a group of other children kidnapped by a demon-possessed artist. Whatever this diabolical artist paints with his ink set becomes reality. Notes: Though "The Doors" from Usagi Yojimbo Color Special #2 was written twelve years earlier, it was always intended to occur later in continuity. This storyline was written to setup the dilemma Usagi encounters in that story, which finally occurs in continuity three years after these issues, in Book 22: Tomoe's Story. Discuss the issue and/or post full reviews below!

Sumi-e is one of my favorite Usagi stories. The back-and-forth dialogue between Usagi and Sasuke is great, fantastic monsters show up throughout, and we start to glimpse more and more of the Demon Queller's origin and abilities. I love the sequence where Usagi asks where Katsushige went, and Sasuke concentrates to sense where he's at. Those seemingly insignificant panels show a glimpse of what power Sasuke really possesses. And, a giant stone samurai fights Zylla. What's better than that?

And, a giant stone samurai fights Zylla. What's better than that? Between that and the climax of Senso, Stan has made me feel like a child watching Super Sentai shows again

The relationship the two formed was fun to watch and the action was great. The best part, as Shax said, was the way Stan brought in all those awesome monsters! I love a good monster story and I love how great these guys looked although I was sad when Beast died, I know she was a villain but it was too bad to see such a cool creature die. My biggest take away though is that I'd love to see Stan do a full on Godzilla comic.

Stories with children in mortal peril aren't as easy for me to read since I became a father. Neveretheless, in this one Usagi encounters analogues of Mothra, Gamera, Ghidorah, and Godzilla (I don't remember a giant centipede or samurai in any Godzilla movies, but I haven't seen them all), so I enjoyed it immensely.
