Squadron Supreme #14 has been around for a few weeks and yet I haven't posted "bad dialogue of the month." Sorry. I found some bad dialogue but I wanted to check something to see if it was as bad as I thought. It looked like James Robinson isn't just really bad at dialogue, he's also a very lazy wanker who can't be bothered to do a little online research. I got sidetracked by the holidays and forgot about it. But today I finally remembered to look something up and, yes, it's as bad as I thought. No surprise. It's more bad dialogue from Jim Hammond, the Human Torch. He's in a fight with Nighthawk on the S.H.I.E.L.D Heli-carrier. And he starts making fun of his name: I DID SOME RESEARCH ON YOU ... "NIGHTHAWK"! ... KNOW WHAT? ... YOU DON'T EXIST.
HAWKS HUNT IN DAYLIGHT. THEY DON'T HAVE THE EYES OF NOCTURNAL ANIMALS -- THE DARKNESS PRECLUDES THEIR TALONS.
THEY'RE NOT OWLS. NOT BATS.
THAT MAKES YOU A LIE. MEANINGLESS FICTION. "The darkness precludes their talons"? Sheesh. Of course, we all know that the most important thing about a super-hero name is that it must be something that actually exists in the real world. Like a Green Lantern. Or a Spider-Man. Or a Doctor Octopus. Or a Human Torch. So stupid. What makes it even stupider is that there are birds called nighthawks! They aren't that closely related to actual hawks, as far as I can tell. They hunt at night and mostly eat insects. Jim Hammond's comments about hawks may be 100% factually true. But it's irrelevant. Because there are a whole class of birds called "nighthawks." So, not a "lie." Not a "meaningless fiction." And James Robinson can't be bothered to double-check when he has (what he thinks is) a very clever and witty line-of-reasoning. And James Hammond comes off once again as a clueless, obnoxious wanker who's not nearly as bright as he thinks he is. Well, maybe that's what Robinson was going for. He seems to go for that a lot, though, for characters who have never been presented that way.

My comic shop didn't get Squadron Supreme #15 when it was scheduled to ship. And it wasn't there the following week, so I did a little research and it seems that it shipped on time, so I'll have to track it down somehow.
It's also the last issue. I can't say I'm surprised. Robinson wasted the potential of one character after another because ... I have no idea why. He's just not very good.
When I track down #15, I'll do one more post of "Worst Squadron Supreme dialogue of the month."
Now, I'm a little more inclined to give Dr. Strange a chance.

I went to the comic book shop to get Astro City #41, but it's still way off-schedule.
So I didn't get any of the comics that came out this week. I still spent almost $16.
I bought Avengers #3.1 because it had Cap's Kooky Kwartet on the cover. And it's pretty good. It's a throwback to the period after Avengers #16, where the Avengers were Captain America, Hawkeye, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. The "Next Issue" page shows the Kooky Kwartet up against The Frightful Four! That looks awesome!
And I also picked up the first two issues of the new Hulk comic. Bruce Banner is dead, apparently killed by Hawkeye in Civil War II (so glad I didn't read that!), so Jen Walters isn't She-Hulk anymore, she's just Hulk. (I like the comic OK, but I don't really see why she isn't still She-Hulk. Since Jen is not She-Hulk anymore, can Betty Ross be She-Hulk instead of Red She-Hulk?) Neither the Hulk or She-Hulk appears in the first two issues. But I liked it anyway. Jen has survived Civil War, but just barely and she's still dealing with the mental trauma and getting back to work as a lawyer. As Jen Walters, not as She-Hulk (or Hulk or whatever). She's working on an eviction case that is slowly becoming very interesting ...

I finally tracked down Squadron Supreme #15, the last issue. I didn't have high hopes for the series, but I thought it would last longer than this. Not much longer though. There isn't any dialogue as egregiously bad as the material I culled from the last few issues, but I still felt like I should honor the tradition I established of poking fun at the worst dialogue in every issue. There's some stinkers in here, that's for sure. So Hyperion is helping Namor rebuild Atlantis, and he explains that it was the least he could do because he helped destroy it. Then he talks about how far he's fallen from his previous career of good deeds and fighting for justice ... I USED TO BE A PARAGON. WHAT HAPPENED TO ME? To which responds Namor responds: RHETORICAL QUESTION, RIGHT? Robinson should not be allowed to write Namor. Even if Namor was the type to notice a rhetorical question, I think he would know that it's not at all clever or witty to interrupt people and point out every rhetorical question. It makes me think that if you were to hang out with James Robinson, you would roll your eyes a lot because of how tedious it is having every utterance identified and parsed. Hyperion continues: I MET SURVIVORS OF LOST EARTHS ... And Namor interrupts again: SIGH. ARE WE REALLY GOING TO HAVE THIS CONVERSATION? I'm with Namor on this.

Amadeus Cho, who not only is up to a high for Modern Marvel issue #15, but is also starring in Champions.

Just out of curiosity, do they give any explanation how this new team decides to call itself the Champions? Is there any connection with the old Champions from the 70s?

Saw this on geekedoutnation.com: coming May 10th from DC's Young Animal imprint the Allred's family are doing a 6 issue mini-series on Jack Kirby's Forager from New Gods.
"Forager is just one of the hive until the day he breaks out of his cocoon and finds himself in a mysterious house in an unknown realm. But he’s not alone. As he comes across strange creatures—a ghostly girl, a talking teddy bear—Bug will have to figure out how he got here and how to return. He’ll soon cross paths with the evil General Electric, who is after a precious metal that might change the very fabric of life! Forager must set out on a trip across the Multiverse to stop this evil uprising, and may even establish himself as a New God in the process."

I was saying on the Jack Kirby FB group that I'm feeling pretty suspicious about how this will turn out: one article mentioned Cosmic Odyssey as the reason they liked Forager, and if that is an influence it isn't going to be something I'll want to read. However, it could have been just the journalist speaking for him or herself, not the Allreds.

There's definitely a #WeareallChampions movement that revolves around the first adventure... I'm not certain if she actually started it, or someone on Marvel's version of Twitter did and they just went with it. Kamala and Miles would certainly both know who the Champions were (assuming they're still exist in Marvel continuity), but I don't recall anything more than an offhanded mention.

Forager ?
That's weird.
Won't hold my breath, but I loves me some New Gods.

I ordered Dejah Thoris and the Green Men from Mars #11 through eBay today. When it arrives I'll have the whole 12-issue limited series. The same dealer had a bunch of the issues of the regular Dejah Thoris series that I don't have, so I ended up spending about $30 for 8 or 9 comics. What a weird hobby.

ACtually, Marvel did reboot with Secret Wars. The old universe was completely destroyed, Doom saved some bits, then Franklin Richards used those bits to attempt to but everything back, but it's not the same universe.

Forager ? That's weird. Won't hold my breath, but I loves me some New Gods. While I like the majority of Kirby's contributions to DC, New Gods is not among them, as sacrilegious as it may seem

Has anyone been reading Conan the slayer?
Cullen Bunn is said to be a very good writer, but the solicitation blurbs I've read were so riddled with bad continuity that I feel wary to give this new run a try.
