Published: October 2001 Synopsis: "As a thief, all that matters is skill and quarry, and few know this as much as the master thief, Kitsune. While on the road with her new traveling partner, Gen, the lady of pocket picking finds her own pockets picked, which makes her nostalgic. And so begins the story of Kitsune's youth. The daughter of a prosperous merchant fallen on bad times, Kitsune grew up homeless on the street, stealing to survive. Though she is certainly an expert at thievery now, she wasn't always. This is the story of girl learning to use her wits to survive under the tutelage of a kindly street performer. But good times don't stay that way; all it takes is robbing the wrong person before the ground falls away." Notes: Origin of Kitsune 1st Kiyoko Discuss the issue and/or post full reviews below!

Kitsune's story is one I've been looking forward for a while, I love beginnings and this one was very touching.

Kitsune and Gen have better chemistry than Kitsune and Usagi do. That makes sense. Usagi grudgingly accepts Kitsune's thieving but will never be comfortable with it; Gen doesn't care as long as she doesn't steal from him.

Gen and Kitsune sitting under a tree, Gen and Kitsune k i s s i n g. I can see these 2 as friends and perhaps lovers eventually. They understand and accept one another simply as they are. In that acceptance there is a begrudging respect and trust they can share. They compliment each other as a pair. Again Stan delivers another reveal of deeper aspects for Kitsune which helps to establish she is more than just a self serving thief looking out for her own interests. The origin of Kitsune shows the harshness and difficulties of living a life that can unexpectedly turn upside down on you. How we adapt to our circumstances and what we do when faced with adversity teaches us and helps us to learn and grow stronger. It speaks highly of Kitsune that she recognizes the little pickpocket who tried stealing from her deserves some help just as she had in her own youth. Kitsune willingly wanting to seek out this orphan to take under her wing turns Kitsune from just another character passing through Usagi's life and makes us the reader want to see and know more of Kitsune and her "story".

Since they are both essentially monetarily driven they make a great pair for comedy and drama and plotting to gain riches.
