I liked the first Grasscutter but I remember not liking the second as much and this story didn't exactly prime me up for it this time around. It just feels too soon for another epic, I much prefer the smaller stories to the larger ones.

Grasscutter II is my absolute favorite. The first was a very busy story in which Usagi didn't even play an active role. This one had a tighter, more desperate feel. It reminded me a lot of Kurasawa's Seven Samurai in that respect.

There doesn't feel like much to this story. It's a prologue to Grasscutter II and feels like the proper pieces brought out and placed for a grand story.
Though I'm currently in the middle of Grasscutter II, and I'm enjoying it more, but that is mostly because it's more focused on the one group.

Reunion is one of those necessary issues that come with having your hero as a traveler. You have to find a way to get him from somewhere else to where he needs to be for the story and you have to reintroduce a few other characters who haven't been a part of the current stories. Gen and Sanshobo make for splendid travel partners with Usagi. All 3 have their own individual traits and characteristics which add much to the story while never distracting or disturbing the actual flow. The 3 of them almost feel like an intro to a joke: there is a Priest, a Mercenary and a Ronin who walk into a bar...
