I had this issue when it came out, but I don't recall it which is exciting as the implications of Saru surviving and thinking she was betrayed could make for a fantastic story.

While it might be easy to view this as a set up for something to happen later (which it does) down the line it is also a tale of the harshness of life and choices made. Finding love is truly great and wonderful but at what cost? Knowing you have chosen a way of life that teaches there is no turning away from it and the choice and commitment you made is forever or to the death, whichever comes 1st? How do you convince yourself and your lover that you can escape? Is it crazy to even hope or try? Or is it better to try and fail?
Chizu who has harbored her own doubts and thoughts about the ninja life allows the lovers to leave the clan and yet she doesn't consider the implications. Kagemaru who wants to be leader see's this decision as weakness and uses the opportunity to strengthen his position within the clan. Is Chizu foolish to allow the lovers to leave and go against the "law/tradition" of the ninja clan? Is she even more foolish to not see or know that Kagemaru is constantly speaking out against her and desirous of her position as clan leader?
In the end both of the lover's and Chizu will pay for their choice.
