A follow up to "the Hairpin Murders" sees Usagi involved in another fun intrigue. I really liked that Kotaro got a good home with the inspector.

I liked how this one had real consequences. I didn't think twice about Usagi slaying the bad guy here, but he's a wanted man/rabbit for a while after.

In the middle of the first part of this story, the maid Yoshino says she would gladly give her life for Lady Maple. I figured right then that she was a goner, but that turned out to be a bit of welcome misdirection.
Life is somewhat cheap in Usagi's world. Bandits, ninja, and various underlings die in droves. But the old lady essentially throwing her life away so Yoshino could be a more effective decoy--a decoy!--really got to me.
This is a nitpick, but the original post says Lord Yamahashi is slain, but it was Chamberlain Toyofuku.

A truly sad story which has in its way a happy ending. A woman of great beauty who is adored and sought after just as stars of today are but who is shown to be trapped in a cage of life unable to have any real freedom or love. That Usagi is able to provide Lady Maple's child a real life with a loving mother and father in Isheda and his wife helps to ease the pain that she endured while hoping to give Kotaro a "normal" life of love and devotion and delivers new joy to a family which was hurting in their loss of a child. This one had me in tears by the end and a surprise that the handmaiden survives! Will she turn up again later in Usagi's story as many characters come and go in his travels?
