I've never tried any stouts before. I'm very much a lager guy, but I've been trying to expand my tastes. Where should I start? You really need to remedy that. At least you're not stuck in pilsners. I've dabbled in IPAs here and there, but they're hit or miss for me. Some of them just taste way too fruity.

I've never tried any stouts before. I'm very much a lager guy, but I've been trying to expand my tastes. Where should I start? I like Samuel Smith's line of beers. Almost everyone I tried. Taddy Porter, Oatmeal Stout, and Nut Brown Ale are a few of my favorites. All heavy and filling beers though. Chimay is pricey so I only treat myself to a bottle every so often. The "yellow" label is the lighter of the three types. With Blue being a nice robust flavor and the red being a bit more fruity. Red is my personal favorite. Brother Theloneous is pretty good too. But to be honest I haven't seen it in the liquor the last few times. Not sure if they're just out or it's not being brewed. It's by the same brewery as Old Rasputin.

I tried a new IPA last night called Hop Devil from a company called Victory Brewing. It was a bit too fruity for my tastes, which tends to be the issue I have with a lot of IPAs. I can deal with the bitterness just fine, but those fruit flavors just get to me for some reason.

I have found that in IPA's i tend to like those that have a stronger acidity to them. Apple, pear, lime and their ilk seem to work better in taste for me.

I decided to ressurect this thread because I've been trying a few new beers. Most recently I tried Guinness' Foreign Extra Stout. It's even more delicious than the standard Guinness sold in the US. It's nice coffee, chocolate and nut flavors to it. I imagine this might be what's the standard at home when ordered at a bar. Here it's a steep 7.4% abv. free img

Fuller's London Porter 5.4% abv A very nice porter. Not Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter, one of my favorite Porter, still nice complex array of flavors. At first taste the coffee overtones are strong. But a few drinks later it starts to mellow out and you get the overall flavor. Would definitely recommend for anyone that already likes porters.

Is Black Butte Porter available everywhere? It's certainly THE porter around here.

According to their website I am unfortunately in one of the 22 states that they are not available in. Depending on where in Texas it is available, that would be the closest route to be able to try some.
Deschutes Brewery currently distributes in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Washington D.C., British Columbia, and Alberta.

One of my favorites, Russian imperial stouts, but new brewer to me. I have not had this before. Very strong. In both flavor and abv at 10%. But not as a full bodied flavor as some other imperial stouts I've tried. The bite is a bit overpowering but that could also be the alcoholic content too. And the flavor doesn't end up sticking with me after a few drinks. Not a bad beer at all. $3.49 for 14.88 oz. But as far as imperial stouts not one of my favorites. But not disappointed I bought it. Edit: Wow 15 oz of 10% abv is getting to me lol

Vanessa House Powers Out 10% abv This is a very different beer. It has almost a thick creamy texture like a liquer. Almost zero head when I poured it. And now it's calm and looks like a tar pit in a glass. Very heavy on the coffee tones. The creamy texture almost reminds me of coffee with creamer or milk (which I can't stand to drink) but just not as offensive. Maybe because it's cool. I didn't let it get too cold. Normally stouts are drank room temperature but I got to have them at least cool. I probably won't buy it again. This was recommended to me by a craft beer connoisseur I know. He really liked it. I think the four pack 12oz cans I bought will be enough to determine if it'll grow on me or not.

Wine for a change this time. One I treat myself once and whole being it's a bit pricey for a 750ml bottle. But Carmenere have a nice balance of sweet and dry. I don't usually favor sweet wines but this one has a balance. From the bottle: Chocolate, coffee and spice combined with raspberries and blackberries in this Carmenere, Chile's very own grape.

A Mexican style lager from a local brewery here in Wyoming Just a good, drinkable beer for when you're having more than one. Or two.
