Weren't the stories seen in The Rampaging Hulk (which didn't fit in the regular continuity) explained away by making them some kind of movies made by an alien filmmaker? It would be fitting if the Deadly Hands of Kung Fu stories were movies too, considering movies were their source of inspiration. Plus, Groucho Marx is in them. Only the nine issues of Rampaging were retconned into alien movies. The run of stories after the book was renamed The Hulk don't fit at all into the continuity of Ol' Purple Pants' mainstream series and read as though they have no connection to the Marvel Universe. As far as I know, they've never been explained (but then again I stopped following the MU in '86 so...). And Rufus T. Hackstabber (the Groucho character) appears in the four-color MoKF series, debuting in Giant-Size #4. Cei-U! I summon the early morning errata!

One thing to keep in mind as you progress through this material, shax, is that for the most part (#1 being the most obvious exception) the Shang-Chi stories in Deadly Hands of Kung Fu are utterly irreconcilable with the color series continuity-wise (ditto with the Iron Fist issues of DHoKf, incidentally). They're almost like an alternate history. Cei-U! I summon the heads up! Another heads up... Giant Size 2 and 3 are integral to the series.

I wonder why the Curtis mags were completely out of continuity, especially with Savage Sword of Conan and Deadly Hands of Kung Fu being written by the same person writing the color comic series. Perhaps it was that very concern I addressed earlier of alienating readers of the color comics by having something major occur in the mags, but that wouldn't be too hard to work around with continuing subplots that never directly affect the main series.

SSOC is also out of continuity. It flashes back and forth in Conan's life throughout the series.

Say, who was Sandy? Shang refers to her early on in the series, but I don't recall seeing her. Was she in DHoKF? Or in one of the Giant-Size issues?

As I understand it, the general consensus of the time was the color comics were considered fare for a younger audience (and under the comics code) while the b&w mags were not submitted to the code and intended for an older audience. I don't think they expected a lot of overlap in readership, and since the mags were not code approved the thought was the kids wouldn't have access to them, so they couldn't or shouldn't link directly to the color comics. There was also much less a sense that the entire output had to be a single product line like there is today. -M

Ah, young love... I'll have to hunt down some Giant-size MoKF! (I have the one with iron Fist... I believe it's the first issue).
Thanks, oh summoner of the sneak preview!

Giant Size 1 is an anthology issue.
Giant Size 2 is a stunner where Shang finds love for the first time.
Giant Size 3 introduces Clive Reston which is obviously hugely important. Asterisk here as well because it features a rare above average ink job from Vinnie Colletta.
Giant Size 4 has the Groucho Marx appearance and some decent Keith Pollard art.
Pollard also did the never published Giant Size 5 which ends up appearing in #s 36 and 37 respectively.
I'm interested to see where Shaxper places that issue in the continuity as I think it is supposed to go after issue 27 but gets published after 35. (Continuity Fun!)

Is this something that should be included in the MoKF reviews?

Well, it is in continuity for both characters and it does feature the first meeting between Iron Fist and Shang-Chi...

Is this something that should be included in the MoKF reviews? It is a fun issue but does not have anything to do with the plot of MoKF 17-125.
You can skip the Marvel-Two-In-One and the Marvel Team Up even though most people consider those to be the best issues of the series.
The Giant-Size must be included.

I don't intend to skip anything that features Shang Chi and is either written by (or affects the continuity of) Doug Moench. Which issues of Marvel Two in One and Marvel Team Up are we talking about?

MTIO 29 and MTU 82-85
You can add GS Spider Man 2 to the list of skips. Not part of Doug's story. Not referenced in any context of MoKF. Just a wee bit of marketing a character by Marvel.
These are all fun issues mind you...

Okay, Paulie beat me to it. Let me replace my post by this sonnet from Shakespeare.
From fairest creatures we desire increase, That thereby beauty's rose might never die, But as the riper should by time decease, His tender heir might bear his memory: But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes, Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel, Making a famine where abundance lies, Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel. Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament And only herald to the gaudy spring, Within thine own bud buriest thy content And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding. Pity the world, or else this glutton be, To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.
