Man, I think I need to track down a version of this with the watercolors! The story itself is a pretty thrilling look at the battle where Usagi lost his lord but I can only imagine how much more evocative it would be in Stan's water colors.

I think the watercolor version appears in The Art of Usagi Yojimbo. I'm not positive, though, so I'll check later today.

I think I'm going to need to pick that up even if it doesn't have this story, it looks awesome.

The inks in the flashback are by Sergio Aragones. I remember thinking that the horses' faces looked like those in Groo. In fact, all of it looks Groo-ish. Really drives home the influence an inker has.

Feb/1997 - issue #10 - Patience of the Spider (featuring General Ikeda) Wasn't that Ikeda's first appearance?

I'm going to admit how dense, and quicklyrics I've digested these, I never realized this was a scar. Feel pretty stupid, lol.

I'd always assumed it was an expressive eyebrow. I skimmed all the way back and it looked very obvious in retrospect.

For a minute reading it I thought that the scar was just a new thing being added, and only on looking back did I truly see just how much it was there.

Just read this yesterday. For the black and white version Aragone's inking makes this very different looking and helps to highlight this as Usagi's memories. Gonna have to track down a watercolor version to see just how different it may look. A lot of story packed into so few pages showing how much depth Stan has a true writer/artist combo.
