This is the story where we see that Jei isn't just some crazy guy but is actually supernatural in nature as with the touch of his hand a random spear turns black and replaces the one Usagi destroyed. Whats more interesting though is that he saves a little girl's life because he sees no evil in her, we see more of this later later on but actually makes him truly interesting for the first time.
A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP
Jei is his superbly dark and evil self yet here his darkness shows some substantial shades. He is relentless in his killing and doing his "work" even to the point of claiming a new sword with his powers. Yet when he turns to strike down Keiko he stops noting the Gods see no evil in her and even admonishes her to leave before the flames kill her. In doing so he gains our respect and understanding that there is more to him than just being an evil killer. Keiko even must sense this for as she has lost everything and has no hope or thought for her future she chooses to follow the dark man who has in his own way just set her free. Very powerful writing and art all found within a " funny animal comic" book. This is what makes Stan's series stand head and shoulders above much of the mainstream.
Gimme a home on the ol' prairie where I can sit in my rockin' chair reading my favorite old comic books of yesteryear!
