Orios sounded fascinating when I was a kid, then I tasted it and the spell was over... Nowadays, I almost only eat cookies I bake myself anyways... You must now send each and every one of us samples of your cookies.

The Pet Rock just baffles me as both a concept and a fad, Chia Pets come in close second Marx would have had a field day with it. All exchange-value, zero use-value. Consumers will buy anything as long as its marketed to them in the right way.

Consumers will buy anything as long as its marketed to them in the right way. If it had at least had some novelty value, then I could see the point. Like maybe it glowed in the dark like those Kryptonite rocks or doubled as a magic 8-ball?

As dopey as Chia Pets look, at least you can do something with them. Even the glow in the dark 'Kryptonite' rocks, and the 'message-displaying' Magic 8 Ball have the appeal of being conversation pieces. But the Pet Rock? A rock. In a box. 'Can it core ay apple? 'No, it can NOT core ay apple!'
Oh, wait, I know. It was the '70s, and 'It's SOOOOOOO funny when you're HIIIIIGH, maaaaannn...' Beyond that, how is it different from picking up that big rock you find in the front or back of the house, putting it in any old cardboard box, and calling THAT your pet rock? And that can still be soooooo funny when you're stoooooooned, duuuude...

Amityville, the movie! Sounds like a very scary movie when you're a kid. In the reality of adult perception, it's a laughable waste of celluloid.

Hula-Hoops have always kind of been popular, but never really "huge" per say. Now if you're looking for a really dumb fad, look no further than the Swing-Wing

Hula-Hoops have always kind of been popular, but never really "huge" per say. Now if you're looking for a really dumb fad, look no further than the Swing-Wing In 1958 the Wham-O toy company started a nationwide ad campaign marketing the modern hula hoop. Within 4 months, 25 million hula hoops were sold. In 2 years 100 million were sold. It was possibly the biggest fad craze at the end of the 50s.
