I was sad to see the tokage lizards go, and sadder still to see the monk die but this is one of those stories gives you a really interesting look into Japanese culture. The idea that a group of people thought to connect with the spiritual world through music really makes me think there's wonder still left in this world.

Quite a compliment to Stan's work as well. I'm not a religious man but the Fuke sect of Buddhism way just seems like a fantastic method to commune; I only know slightly more than what was in this story but it just seems very pure which is admirable and Stan's introduction to that is one of the many reasons this is such a fantastic book.

Having read this over the weekend it was a very poetic and touching story. Usagi learned much from the monk and you can feel the respect, honor and sense of loss from Usagi and the tokage lizards as they mourn over the grave site while Usagi pledges to report the death and deliver the Shakuhachi flute to one of the sects temples. I actually teared up when the tokage refused to leave with Usagi and chose instead to remain at the grave.
That panel of Usagi and the lizards at the grave without any word balloons would make a very beautiful headstone for me one day when i should die if i didn't plan on being cremated. Then again it would also make a splendid urn casting for my ashes!
