I have zero recollection of this story and that's a shame because it's a fantastic read. It's just a brief little interlude but man does it pack a punch. I love the way Stan frames a day in the life of the statue, the simple way he illustrates the passing of time is just beautiful. He used a similar technique before int the duel to really evoke a deep sense of forlorn sadness but here it's almost whimsical in the simplicity it conveys. If we were to do a best of the 90's poll I might throw this one in for contention.

I like the idea of viewing Usagi from outside of himself, almost objectively. Usagi often feels like such a small figure in the larger intrigues of Japan/Nippon, but this story clearly depicts him as a force of karma. It makes who he is and what he does seem so much more important. Not sure I'm making sense with this. |

I agree with everything said so far in this thread. This might be the story I think of most when I think of my favorites. What I like most is that, to Usagi, he's slaughtered a group of nameless bandits, something that happens in almost every issue, while only the reader knows the full, gut-wrenching story. I suppose all those other groups of nameless bandits have probably left similar legacies of tragedy before Usagi mows them down.

Just read this last night and adore this story. While Usagi isn't the highlight it shows how much of a catalyst he is as he wanders the country. For him a simple act of defense when attacked provides revenge, solace and peace to everyone in this area. The simple line of turning the mouth line from a slight downward turn into a slight upward denoting the change in the Jizo-sama is remarkably subtle yet expresses so much of this story's delights. A simple short story you think and yet i can imagine Sakai worked even harder and longer for getting this one coming out so perfectly. This is one i can find myself going back to time and again to enjoy.
