Mary Jane Watson's a Bob Dylan fan. Reminds me of the claim (in the FF annual 1 text backup feature) that Johnny Storm's hobby is listening to jazz. Johnny's music has never been hinted at in the comics, where his hobbies were fixing cars and attempting to get dates. (As far as I can tell that backup was written by Flo Steinberg, not Stan). What is the general opinion here of official handbooks, "powers explained" pages, etc? I don't want to derail this excellent thread, so will just say I am very pleased to see everybody here has cited the actual comics. I never cared to read those handbooks. I feel someones powers should be displayed in action on the comic pages.

The Clint Barton Hawkeye was the only Superhero that had a disability that had nothing to do with a power( Hearing loss). It was undone by the Heroes return Franklin Richards Reset. I've never been a regular reader of the Avengers or any of Hawkeye's solo series. I knew about his career as a criminal, but not this. Was his hearing restored at some point in the original continuity? Any stories I've read (late '70s to early '90s), there was never any indication that he had the disabliity, or any accommodations for it (hearing aids, lip-reading). In fact, an issue of Marvel Team Up prominently mentions his collection of jazz records.

Something has to be mentioned twice, preferably by different writers, before it counts as continuity. The Thing, or course, DOES get his kicks from lodown, New Orleans Jazz.

After Bruce Wayne's parents were killed, he was raised by a kindly old lady named Mrs. Chilton who held a dark secret she shared with no one.
Speaking of Batman and secrets, for 22 years Jimmy Olsen knew Batman was Bruce Wayne, because Batman was in a good mood one day and simply decided to tell him.
Oh, and according to Action Comics 73, Clark Kent collects antique clocks. Yeah, not too startling, but who knew? That always bugged me. Jimmy knew Batman's secret identity, but not Superman's?! I call shenanigans! If the Crisis did one good thing, it was erasing this piece of foolishness. I learned about Jimmy's Bat-ID awareness in a Dollar Comic-era issue of World's Finest. At some point, Lois asks the 'Why would Batman tell you his secret, but Superman wouldn't?' question, and Jimmy says that he wouldn't want to know Superman's secret, because Superman's enemies might torture Jimmy for the info-whereas Batman's enemies would never think of capturing some guy from Metropolis to learn that secret. Or something.Yeah, it still sounds pretty lame. Silver-Age Lois, I could see being a blabbermouth, but both she and Jimmy were a lot more mature by the '70s. It seemed a bit 'off' to me for years, that Superman was the only JLAer(or at least, one of the few, not sure about Wonder Woman) who didn't have a 'civilian' confidant who knew his identity. Hell, if Jimmy can know the 'caped crusaders' secrets, then maybe Superman could trust Alfred...or even Commissioner Gordon..with his!

I strongly agree. Simply saying "The Thing can lift 85 tons" is worse than meaningless. Sometimes he can lift far less, sometimes thousands, it entirely depends on the circumstances. The circumstances are what make a story worth reading! And don't get me started on facts that are simply made up... Sorry for the tangent. Back to the favorite tidbits.

He lost his hearing as a result of an encounter with a super-villain sometime in the early-mid 80s just before West Coast Avengers mini and the solo Hawkeye mini. It was mentioned in Avengers and played a part in the HAwkeye lead feature in the Solo Avengers/Avengers Spotlight book, but didn't get much "airtime" outside of that and as said was undone by Heroes Return. -M Edit to add: However, the hearing loss and disability has been brought back by Fraction and Aja in their run and Marvel did a special comic featuring Hawkeye for kids with hearing loss that wa done at the request of a mother whose son refused to wear a hearing aid because super-heroes didn't. Edit to add II: looks like it was in this mini from 1983, his first meeting with Mockingbird where he lost his hearing after using a sonic arrow to counter the villain's powers/scheme

Of course, it didn't work out and he was answering questions out of order. It was a comedy type issue.

For the fans of DC's Star Trek series... Saavik's Vulcan betrothed, Xon, has the same name as the Vulcan who was supposed to replace Spock in a new Trek series was being prepared by Gene Roddenberry.
That series was eventually turned into ST: the motion picture, and since in the interim Leonard Nimoy had agreed to resume his old role the new Vulcan was dropped from the story. (The actor who had developed Xon didn't want him to be demoted to carrying Mr. Spock's luggage!)

I want to say that Hawkeye's hearing loss played a part in a few other stories, in terms of affecting the plot. I can't put my finger on it, but I'd swear he defeated at least one sonic-powered villain because he couldn't hear their power and wasn't affected by it.

If you think Mary Jane and Spider-Man would be OK with that I will!
