Lone Goat and Kid are two of my favorite UY characters. I haven't read much Lone Wolf and Cub (just started this week), but I really enjoy the stories about Yagi and Gorogoro.
Did Gorogoro's name come from the fact that "Daigoro" sounds like "di-goro", or "two-goro" (hence "Gorogoro")? Just a thought.

Did Gorogoro's name come from the fact that "Daigoro" sounds like "di-goro", or "two-goro" (hence "Gorogoro")? Just a thought. I could be completely misremembering here, but I think I recall Stan indicating somewhere that "gorogoro" is the sound the Japanese use to indicate a stomach rumbling. |

Summary: Lone Goat and Kid walk their road to hell, killing a gang of Hirone's samurai who ambush them. The counselors originally responsible for his betrayal plot his death, planning to pit him against Usagi and then claim credit. One counselor, Wakame, also plans to slay his co-conspirators. Wakame demonstrates Usagi's skill to his companions by having some retainers attack him disguised as bandits. Yagi is hired to assassinate Usagi. He is tricked into believing Usagi tried to assassinate Oyaneko. They battle. Usagi seems about to overcome Yagi, but Gorogoro turns the tide and Usagi falls down a cliff. Wakame sends 40 samurai to attack the fatigued Yagi while he kills his own allies. Yagi prevails and is left to face off against Wakame, who seeks to use Gorogoro as a shield. He underestimates Gorogoro, who slays him, but rolls down the cliff. Usagi saves Gorogoro and he and Yagi make peace. Usagi wishes Lone Goat and Kid good luck on the road to hell. Thoughts: This story was set up last issue with the brief description of the origin of Lone Goat and Kid. In hindsight, it is difficult for me to tell if the foreshadowing was obvious or not, as it's been many years since I first read these issues. The story clearly paused a little last issue to spend three panels describing them. However, one could suppose his reasoning was merely a nod to Lone Wolf and Cub. The series has several such nods. You learn in this issue that it was more than a cameo and this nod would take the form of two additions to Usagi's universe. (The title of the collection may give this away) We even see more detail of the conspiracies set up last issue, actually meeting the counselors who betrayed Yagi. These renditions of the classic Koike/Kojima characters are pretty awesome. I particularly like Gorogoro, able to convey such carefree innocence while killing enemies. Good additions to the cast, fun intrigue, a good swords duel. A fine issue. Notes:- Counselors responsible for framing Yagi: Wakame, Tadon, and Kagihana

Lone Goat and Kid are two of my favorite UY characters. I haven't read much Lone Wolf and Cub (just started this week), but I really enjoy the stories about Yagi and Gorogoro. Lone Goat & Kid OOPS, I mean Lone Wolf & Cub is a true classic of epic proportions. A modern masterpiece of love, honor and vengeance. It may start off reading like just a bunch of independent stand alone episodes, but as you get a ways into the series, those episodes start building upon each other, becoming more and more interconnected as Itto and Daigoro travel farther and farther down their road to hell, taking Retsudo and the rest of the Yagyu clan with them...... |

I really liked how this story flowed out of the last, the casual way it was set up in the last issue made this story flow so much better. On top of that Lone Goat and Kid are some of the best homages ever.
