Justice League of America Chapter 12
Written by Mr. Jupiter
Lois Lane looked Karl Kyle up and down. He was dressed head to toe in black, even wearing a black toboggan. Both of them stood on the outskirts of the IADC prison.
"You're sure you have everything you need?" Lois asked.
"I do. I have the schematics memorized and I'm pretty sure I know where your friends are. The robot guy is in a holding cell and the girl's in the infirmary. I have the dohickey for robot guy to blast his way out. Piece of cake."
"His name is Cyborg. Don't let me down. If you get caught, I won't be able to get you out." Lois replied.
"I don't get caught." Karl winked. He scurried off towards the IADC building. Lois watched as he carefully stepped onto the property. He executed a series of flips, bypassing all security cameras and sensors. He leapt like a cat onto a dumpster and leapt again onto an awning, then pulling himself up onto a ledge. He found an access to the buildings ventilation system and made his way in. With the speed of a cat, he was soon maneuvering the maze of duct work. He made several turns and arrived near a series of ducts that led to holding cells.
"If I remembered correctly, this should be the tin-man's cell." Karl thought. He pressed his face into the grate that covered the air duct and saw Victor Stone.
"Pssst, hey...up here." Karl whispered.
Cyborg looked up. "What the--?"
"Shhhhh, your friends sent me. I'm here to break you out."
Karl quietly removed the grating and an alarm went off.
"Idiot." Cyborg huffed.
"Here!" Karl said, tossing Cyborg a technical device. "Miss Lane said you'd need this."
Cyborg smiled. "This is just the boost I need. They did something to me, keeping my systems off- line. I'm about to be back in business."
With that, Cyborg blasted the door to his cell open. Several IADC guards were filling the area around the door. Cyborg inserted the device into one his drives, his cybernetic eye glowing red.
"Thanks for the hospitality, but I must be going now." he growled as he released a beam from the cybernetic eye, blasting all the agents down.
"Whoa." Karl watched. "Snap out of it Karl, go get the girl." he said to himself.
As he scurried through another duct, he could hear several explosions as Cyborg made his way through the compound.
"The agents are distracted, getting the Swan girl out of here should be easy." Karl surmised as he exited through the air duct into the infirmary. He noticed several young girls all in hospital beds, hooked up to machines. He found Katie, the Silver Swan, and carefully unhooked her limp body from the medical machines.
"What was the code word Miss Lane gave me to wake her up?" Karl's mind raced. "Ah!" he said, as he whispered a word into Katie's ear. The young woman's eyes popped open and he coerced her into the duct and followed.
Minutes later, he led Katie to Lois who had met up with Cyborg.
"Great work, Karl. You got them out of there in 10 minutes!" Lois smiled.
"Told you, piece of cake." Karl smiled.
Lois ushered them to a waiting car and sped off into the night.
In the JLA satellite, Fate and Madame Xanadu had arrived. They explained to Black Canary that they thought they had discovered a way to return White Canary to normal. Before the two mystics could explain their findings, the JLA trouble alert sounded. Aquaman answered. It was Tom Tressor from the IADC.
"Aquaman, we have big trouble. Someone bypassed all of our security. Broke the Silver Swan and Cyborg out of here." the blond, attractive man said.
"How did that happen? You guys are supposed to have the best security on the planet."
"I don't know....we did get some surveillance footage. Looks like a regular guy, dressed all in black. I don't believe he was a metahuman, just someone very skilled."
Aquaman shook his head. "Thanks Tom. We'll get on it."
Aquaman looked at the assembled members and explained what had happened.
"I'll go. I can canvas the area around the IADC." The Flash volunteered.
"I'll join you." Green Lantern offered.
Moments later the duo transported down to Earth.
"Fate, Madame Xanadu, please tell us what you can about helping Sara." Black Canary urged.
"Based on our research, this Raven character is the daughter of an inter-dimensional demon. She's pure evil and has the ability to steal souls and assimilate them into herself. She needs to feed on souls and once she's drained the soul, she expels it." Fate explained.
"And what happens when she expels the soul?" Black Canary asked.
"The victim leaves this realm." Madame Xanadu said,
"Leaves this realm?" Black Canary said, confused.
"The victim dies." Fate said.
Black Canary started to speak, but Madame Xanadu spoke first.
"Your sister will not die, not if we can help it."
Her words calmed Black Canary down.
Fate continued, "Laurel, your bond with your sister is key. We will need you to guide her soul back. Can you do that?"
"Of course I can!" Black Canary said, determination in her voice.
"Good, we shall begin. Canary, take your sister's hand." Madame Xanadu commanded.
Black Canary took her sister's hand and Fate and Madame Xanadu joined hands.
In unison the two mystics began chanting in a language Black Canary didn't understand. She noticed her sister's body stiffen.
Bright light started to pour from Fate's body and into Madame Xanadu's.
In the Secret Society's lair, Raven cut her eyes left and right. "Someone...someone is intruding." she said. Just then she felt a pain run down her back. She felt as if she was being split in half.
"No...no...I am the daughter of Trigon...you cannot intrude upon me...you will not impose your will on me!!" She screamed as her forehead extended and an extra set of eyes appeared. She grabbed the wall and dug her nails in.
"Raven, what is going on? I heard you scream." came Blackfire's voice.
"You will not take her soul! She is mine!" Raven cried out, her head thrashing.
Blackfire stood back. She had never seen Raven in such a shape before.
Back in the satellite, Black Canary felt her sister's grip tighten.
"Sara?" Black Canary said, noticing her sister's color returning. "Fate! Madame Xanadu, whatever you're doing, it's working!"
Fate and Madame Xanadu continued chanting.
Elsewhere, Raven screamed. Blackfire was disturbed by the sight unfolding in front of her. Raven's screams sounded like millions of voices at once. Her body contorted and her skin turned red. Blackfire started towards her friend just as flash of light knocked her back. For a moment the room was warm and still. Blackfire squinted her eyes and saw a bright from pouring from Raven's eyes, nose, and ears. Raven continued to scream and collapsed. Then, all was quiet.
In the satellite, White Canary sat up in her bed, gasping for air.
"Sara!" Black Canary cried, hugging her sister.
Sara Lance glanced around, her eyes wild. Fate and Madame Xanadu approached the confused woman.
Sara recoiled for a moment. Fate removed his helmet.
"Sara, can you hear me? Do you know us? We're your friends." his calm voice came.
Black Canary gently stroked her sister's hair. "Sara, it's me. Laurel."
Sara shut her eyes and took a deep breath and relaxed. She hugged her sister for what seemed like an eternity.
At IADC headquarters, Flash and Green Lantern surveyed the damage caused by Cyborg and Silver Swan's escape.
"Good grief, what are we up against?" Flash said, surveying the damage.
"My ring detects a trail, but it suddenly just stops. Whoever these people are, they're good." Green Lantern sighed.
"And that's not good for us. I've criss-crossed the area 3 times and can't find a thing." The Flash replied as the duo watched IADC agents go about the working of cleaning up the destruction left in Cyborg's wake.
Several days later, Sara had recovered from her ordeal. She couldn't remember much about what had happened. Some of the Justice League members had assembled for the debriefing.
"All I can remember is a feeling of hopelessness. But, I do remember this."
"Go ahead." Aquaman said.
"This woman, Raven...she's part of a Society. I saw another woman, an alien. Gorilla God was there too."
"This can't be good." Flash sighed.
"Do you know what they were doing, what they are up to?" Batwoman asked.
"I....I can't recall it all. It was like I was part of Raven....she violated me...my memories...my soul...I can't get this dirty feeling out of me..." White Canary choked up.
"It's ok, Sara. Take your time." Green Lantern said, reassuringly.
"I think my sister has had enough." Black Canary said,
"No, I need to tell you all this. Raven is evil, pure dark, evil. Her associates are up to something. I remember a leader, I never got a good look at him...something about him was familiar." Sara said. "That's all I can tell you."
"It's ok, you did really well. I'm just sorry this happened." Hawkman said. "And I've outfitted the satellite with new security that will hopefully keep teleporters out."
Sara smiled weakly. Despite being back with her sister and friends, she didn't quite feel like herself. She wondered if she would ever feel normal again.
