Wow, I just read that ending much differently than I ever had before. He goes back into the house at the end...I always read it as him just leaving and never really paid much more attention to it than that...but he goes back in after saying he hopes she finds mercy. Man. That's one hell of a shock. I believe Usagi was in the doorway to leave but did turn around and fulfil the old woman's request. He is standing in the doorway while they are talking and she makes her request. He and Spot are still standing there as she begins singing her lullaby. When her lullaby is cut off mid sentence, he is not in the doorway. Then he reappears in the doorway withhis hand covering his face, emotionally distraught over what he has just done...... The final page has him leaving through the outer gate with Spot howling in anguish over the tragedy.

Man, shaxper and I talked about this when last I read this and I felt like this was what happened and I think this is more compelling evidence that this is what happened. I love how open to interpretation some of Stan's work is.
