Justice League of America Chapter 4 (featuring Titans West)
Rise of the Silver Swan part 2
Written by Mr. Jupiter
Christmas Day at the Trevor household…..
Jerrica Benton-Trevor enjoyed her house full of family and friends. Steve and Diana Trevor, Donna Troy, Tom Tressor, Lilith Clay, and Jerrica’s sister Kimber were all there. Clark and Lana Kent along with their son, Jon the current Superman, were in attendance as well. Connor was enjoying the festivities, but his mind kept going back to Katie. He hadn’t heard from her since she left to attend Penbrooke. He had stepped out for a minute to check his phone.
“No texts, no calls.” Connor thought. “Maybe she met someone else. I thought for sure I'd get a facebook message or something by now. Figured she'd come home for Christmas.”
“Hi Connor. How’s it going?” Jon Kent asked. Connor and Jon had a tense relationship.
“Fine.” Connor said, flatly.
“Look, I don’t want any ill will between us. I know it must be hard to have missed out on all those years. And then you realize your old friends have moved on and then you see me, the new Superman.”
“If you’re asking me to be your sidekick again—“
“No, no I’m not. And I realize that was a mistake. I shouldn’t have done that. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I’d like us to be friends, even work together when you want-- on your terms. I think I could learn a lot from you.”
“Wow, I’m not sure what to say….thanks. I’d like that.” Connor and Jon shook hands. Clark saw this from the window and smiled.
Connor and Jon talked. He told Jon about Katie leaving and how it gotten him down.
“Penbrooke Academy? Hmmmmm.” Jon said.
“You know it? It’s supposed to be some ritzy all girls school.”
“Yeah, it’s ringing a bell. After Christmas, I’ll do some looking into it and let you know.”
The next day, Superboy was hanging out with Red Bird. The two friends discussed Christmas.
“It was ok, kind of sucks knowing my mother is out there somewhere and I can’t find her. Dad and I opened presents and spent the day with the Wayne family. Dad went out on patrol as Batman last night. Why won't my dad won’t tell me who my mother is or where she is? Why did she leave? Why do adults keep all these stupid secrets.” Red Bird asked his friend.
“No idea. And they do keep some stupid secrets.” Superboy sighed.
“What’s going on with you and Slipstream?” Red Bird asked, changing the subject.
“Slipstream? Nothing.”
“Man, she’s got a huge crush on you. Can’t you tell?”
“I’ve never paid much attention to her. She’s kind of flighty.”
“And totally hot!”
“Maybe you should go after her. Hooking up with a teammate hasn’t worked out for me in the past.” Superboy said, referencing his relationship with Cassie Sandsmark, the one-time Wonder Girl.
Just then Connor’s phone rang. It was Jon Kent.
“Connor, I did some research on Penbrooke. Looks like the school had some trouble several years ago. Some of the girls went missing and were never found. The former headmistress is an unsolved missing persons case too. The missing person cases were kept hush hush. Lots of money at that school and the alums are good at paying off people to keep their mouths shut to protect the school's reputation. Might be worth going up there and checking it out. I could go with you if want. Maybe tell some of the JLA?”
“Thanks Jon, I’ll be in touch if I need you. I have a buddy that I’m sure will help me out.” Superboy smiled at Red Bird.
Just then Wendy Tyler joined the duo.
“Merry Christmas guys! Did you have a great Christmas? What did you get? I got—“
“Hold the mic, Wendy! Chill!” Red Bird laughed.
“Sorry, I’m just so full of the Christmas spirit!”
Connor smiled at Wendy and Red Bird. “You guys up for a quick visit up to Penbrooke?”
Before long, the trio were heading north. Superboy carried Red Bird and Slipstream ran alongside. Moments later they arrived at the school.
“Shouldn’t all the girls be home for the break?” Slipstream asked.
“I’m picking up several heartbeats…one beating really quickly.” Superboy said.
“I’m seeing thermal images….that building over there.” Red Bird said, peering through goggles.
“This is kind of creepy. What are we doing here anyway?” Slipstream asked.
“Checking up on a friend.” Superboy said.
Just then, Slipstream read the school’s sign. “The Penbrooke Academy for Young Women.”
“Probably Superboy’s girlfriend.” She thought. “Look, I’m not going to be part of you two stalking some girls. I’m going home.”
“Don’t rush off so soon!” came a sweet voice. Before them hovered Katie, covered in a silver costume with cybernetic parts, her hair turned a silvery white. Her eyes were bloodshot and wide. A pulsating light covered her neck. Wide, razor sharp wings extended from her back.
“Did you come to bring me a Christmas present?” she hissed.
“Katie…..” Superboy started.
“Katie is dead. There is only the Silver Swan. Am I not the most beautiful girl you've ever seen?” With that she opened her mouth and let out a high, shrill scream. The three Titans dropped to the ground as windows shattered.
“Take this, you American Idol reject!” Slipstream shouted, moving her arms at superspeed, sucking the oxygen away from Silver Swan’s proximity.
Silver Swan started to cough as a clear bubble-like mask covered her nose and mouth. “You see, my suit anticipates my needs. Does yours? She laughed pointing at Slipstream. Silver Swan struck at her with speed that rivaled her own.
Slipstream dodged out of the way and landed a series of super speed bunches, bloodying Silver Swan’s mouth.
“What have they done to you, Katie? I swear I’ll get you out of this!” Superboy said, flying to her side,
“Get me out of this? Why, I’m better than I’ve ever been. I’m a swan, ‘Superboy’ or should I say Connor.”
Superboy was stunned.
“You really think those dorky glasses and altering your posture hid who you really are. Idiot! And what a waste! You are the better of everyone and yet you hide your gifts! Moron!”
“Keep mouthing, Swan Lake!” Red Bird said, launching himself at Silver Swan. He attached some sort of device to a port in her costume.
“You! You brat! What did you do?” Silver Swan shouted. “My suit…it’s shutting down!”
“Just a little virus I picked up. Looks like your Norton anti-virus is out of date.”
With that Silver Swan crashed to the ground, eyes rolled back in her head.
“We’ve got to get her out of here, get her some help.”Superboy said picking the girl up. he noticed parts of her skin had stiches.
“I can run on ahead, get the lab ready and contact Donna, Roy, Mal, and Lilith.” Slipstream offered.
“Man, this is bad news. What’s going on here? Maybe you should take Superman up on his offer to help.” Red Bird said. Before anyone could say a word, there was a piercing noise. The three teens turned and saw a hulking man. Where his arm should have been was a silver cybernetic appendage, glowing red.
Red Bird, Slipstream, and Superboy dropped to the ground. It was as if the noise would shatter their skulls. Soon each of them passed out, Superboy frantically trying to summon help with his communicator.
“Uh uh Superboy.” The man said, walking over to the young man, stomping his hand until the communicator was busted.
“Headmistress, Silver Swan operative is down. Three Titans showed up. They’ve been dealt with as well.” The man said into a communicator built in his arm.
“Very good Mr. Stone. Bring them all to me. Our test run of the Silver Swan just got very interesting.” Vanessa Kapatelis smiled, glancing at an army of blonde girls dressed in various colors of the Silver Swan uniform.
"Gold Swan, assist Mr. Stone, or should I use his working name, Cyborg? Bring our guests to my private office for a post-Christmas party. Be sure to make them uncomfortable."
"Yes, mistress." The Gold Swan smiled. The Gold Swan was Shandi, Katie's dorm-mate.
Minutes later the fallen Titans were assembled before Vanessa and the Swans. Cyborg attached several wires to Silver Swan.
"Silver Swan protocol rebooting. Please wait." he said, coldly.
Seconds later, Katie's eyes popped open. She looked around and saw Slipstream, Superboy, and Red Bird. "Superboy..." she gasped.
"What's going on...what happened?" she mumbled, confused.
"My poor little swan. Here let me help." Vanessa said, walking over to Katie. Vanessa injected a needle into Katie's neck. Moments later, a look of rage and hate came over the young girl's face.
"This is an unforseen development, Mr. Stone, these....Teen Titans wannabes." Vanessa smirked.
"That's Titans West, old lady!" Slipstream, replied defiantly.
" Dispose of this trash." Vanessa demanded, glaring at Slipstream, Superboy, and Red Bird.
A smile came across Cyborg's face as his cybernetic eye started to glow.
