The Justice League of America Chapter 3 (Featuring Titans West)
Rise of the Silver Swan Part 1
Written by Mr. Jupiter
Connor Trevor bounded down the stairs of the Beverly Hills mansion he called home. As usual Jerrica Benton-Trevor was in the kitchen, her son Steven in his high chair. Jerrica’s husband, Scott was away in Metropolis on a photo shoot. Connor and Jerrica chatted over breakfast.
“The Christmas dance is coming up. You asking Katie?” Jerrica asked, referencing a classmate of Connor’s.
“Planning on asking her today.” Connor smiled. Despite all he’d been through, being held captive by the Luthor family for so many years, Connor was an upbeat and optimistic 17 year old. He was looking forward to the remainder of his junior year of high school and the upcoming senior year. Being adopted by the Trevors had been awesome. Scott and Jerrica didn’t expect him to be Superboy all the time and were very supportive of him discovering who he was as Connor, without the big S. He was a member of Titans West, helping out when he could and honing his skills. Connor was taken aback when he learned Clark’s son was now Superman, a role Connor expected to one day assume.
Connor hugged Jerrica good bye, patted Steven on the head and out the door he went. Even though he could fly to school, he preferred to drive like a regular teen-ager. He shortly arrived at school and was greeted by his best friend, Hank Hall Jr.
“Dude, you better hurry up and ask Katie to the Christmas dance. She's moping around this morning. You guys not as cozy as you seem?” Hank asked.
“I’m going to ask her today.” Connor smiled, seeing Katie beside her locker. “I’ll catch you at lunch, Hank.”
Hank went down the hall, leaving Connor with Katie.
“Connor, I’ve got to tell you something.” The pretty blonde started.
“And I’ve got to ask you something.” Connor smiled dangling mistletoe over their heads.
Katie burst into tears.
“Whoa! Katie, I’ve never seen anyone cry at mistletoe. You got something against Christmas?”
“No..it’s not that. Oh Connor, I have to tell you….”
“Tell me? Tell me what?”
“This is my last week here. I'm transferring to a new school. To the Penbrooke Academy.”
“What? Why?” Connor asked, disappointment overcoming him. The Penbrooke Academy was an exclusive all girls high school. Well over 100 years old, the school was very difficult to gain admission into, but its graduates were often accepted to the top colleges. From there the young women often became CEOs, politicians, and other powerful figures.
“I was supposed to go there in the 9th grade, but I was waitlisted. A spot in the junior class came open and I’m next on the list. My parents want me to go for the opportunities….and I do too….but all my friends here….”
Connor was disappointed, but wanted to support his friend. “Look, it’s cool. We can still hang out. Besides, next year is senior year and this sounds like a great opportunity for you. Didn’t you tell me you wanted to have your own clothing line? This could help you get your foot in the door. I want you to come to the Christmas dance with me. Kind of our last hurrah before you go conquer the world.”
That’s just it. I leave Saturday for an orientation. Over the Thanksgiving break, I have to pack and my parents are driving me up there. It’s all happening so fast.”
Connor frowned. He walked Katie to her class and headed to his own.
Later that afternoon, Connor headed to Jupiter Labs for a training session with Red Robin and Slipstream. The three Titans were in the training room. They looked up to the observation window where the former Arsenal, Roy Harper, worked the control panel.
“Angel, initiate module 66-NC.” Roy said to Angel, the online automaton who provided assistance in the labs. Years ago, Mr. Jupiter utilized Angel as a robot assistant. Current technology allowed for her ‘essence’ to be uploaded into the labs’ systems.
“Initiating, please wait” came her soothing robotic voice.”
Roy smiled as the battle simulation began.
The floor beneath the three Titans started to shake. Red Bird quickly jumped to a perch on the wall. Superboy took to the air. Slipstream sped up her molecules, waiting for what came next.
Out of the corner of her eye, the daughter of Hourman and Jesse Quick saw a series of projectiles coming towards her.
“Oh Angel, you’ll have to do better than this.” She laughed, using her super speed to dodge the projectiles. Superboy caught them one by one, smashing them. The floor shifted as a metal tentacle grabbed Red Bird. He laughed, reaching into his belt. He produced a mini torch, freeing himself. The three young heroes heard what sounded like a train coming. Just then, a mini tornado sped across the room. Slipstream ran counterclockwise around it, effectively stopping the twister.
“Hey Arsenal, I thought you were going to give us a workout.” Red Bird smirked, looking up at Arsenal.
Arsenal was silent and said, “Angel, initiate module 73-NC.
“Initiating module 73-NC.” She replied.
A series of doors opened in the training room. Before the Titans could react, a ray shooting fire engulfed Superboy, burning his shirt away.
“Oh!” Slipstream gasped. She had a crush on Superboy and was distracted by his physique.
“Wendi! Stop gawking!” Red Bird shouted as another ray shot ice daggers at him. He grabbed his cape, dodging the daggers.
While Slipstream stood in place, enamored with Superboy, she didn't notice a metallic substance emerging from the floor beneath her. When she started to run, she found that she couldn't.
Superboy landed next to her, smoke pouring off his body. He tried to help her up and didn't notice a series of robotic insects coming towards him.
"Superboy! Watch your back!" Red Bird shouted.
"Agh!!" Superboy grimaced as the contructs stung him.
Red Bird rushed to aid his teammates just as a pit opened. He fell, all the time grasping at his utility belt for a rope.
"Terminating sequence. I detect failure." came Angel's voice.
The room got very still and became quiet. The three young heroes watched as Roy Harper walked towards them. "What's with you guys today? Superboy, you seem distracted. Slipstream, you were oogling Superboy like some pin up. Red Bird, even you were off your game today."
"Bad day at school, Roy. Sorry." Superboy replied as Lilith walked over to him, handing him a Jupiter Labs t-shirt.
"On the battlefield, your opponents won't care if you've had a bad day or not. If you've experienced something upsetting, use that anger...that frustration and chanel it towards your enemy." the pretty psychic smiled.
Roy and Lilith gave the Titans some more guidance and dismissed them. Superboy flew home, thinking of Katie.
Days later, Katie and her parents arrived at the Penbrooke Academy. She noticed how perfect the campus looked. The buildings, the grounds, the other students. Everything. The family parked and walked towards the admissions building.
"You must be Katie! I'm your dorm mate, Shandi!" the pretty blonde hugged Katie and shook hands with her parents.
"And I'm Victor Stone, health and wellness advisor for our students. Here at Penbrooke, we believe in a balance of intellect and physical well-being."
Shandi led Katie and her parents to the dorm. After unpacking her things, Katie's parents hugged her and headed home. Despite her initial apprehension, Katie felt confident she made the right choice by leaving Beverly Hills High.
"I'll leave you to get situated, Katie. Tomorrow is a big day. You're in my classes and I'll introduce you to everyone. The dining hall is still open if your hungry."
"I'm good. I'll finish putting my things away and go check things out."
"Cool! Here's my number. Text me when you're ready and I'll show you around and introduce you to some of the other girls."
Katie watched from the window as Shandi left. There were several girls walking around. All blonde and very pretty. "Kind of cookie cutter." she thought. But she realized this was an elite school where conformity was the norm.
Shandi disappeared into an old brick building with huge columns in front. She made her way down an oaken staircase. As she made her way down a dark hallway, she came upon a door. A retina scanner identified her and she made her way through an ornate door.
"She's here, headmistress."
"Very good, Shandi. What do you think."
"I think we've found our new Silver Swan."
The headmistress spun around in her chair. The name plate on her desk read Vanessa Kapatelis.
"This pleases me Shandi. Tell the other swans. Be sure they befriend her. If all goes well, initiation will be soon." a twisted smile spreading across Vanessa's face.
