Peter Capaldi announced last night on Radio2 that he will be leaving Doctor Who at the end of this year, his last episode will be the Christmas Special. A shame, I'd hoped he'd stay at least another year...

Yeah, I would have liked to have seen Peter Capaldi stay on a bit longer, as he was good in the role. But with Moffat leaving he obviously felt the time was right to move on, which enables Chibnall to bring in his own man as Doctor #13. I wonder who it will be?

At one point, late last night, that was the #1 top story on the BBC News app. I had to chuckle; with everything else that's going on in the world at the moment, the BBC were essentially headlining with "Actor changes job."

Well, it's a big deal to a lot of people! To the more hardcore fans, it's more like a religion than a TV show...

A "clean break" isn't always necessary. Capaldi also contradicts himself: stating he will do the show forever or until they throw him off and now leaving voluntarily, stating how much he loves Who and wanted/dreamed of doing it and then complain over the demands of the shows production schedules (which can be true) being difficult and tiring . But he wishes to leave and Who will survive as it always does. More than likely though it will be someone younger. Everything skews towards young viewers as they are the relentless spenders of merchandising revenue which companies seek. Capaldi was spectacular casting and carried the older cranky Who stylizing and now they can return to another young Doctor.

But the BBC is not a commercial organization, and is specifically prohibited from acting like one, so regardess of the wishes of its merchandising arm, that can't (or shouldn't) really have any bearing on casting choices.

In case you missed it, Dr Who Magazine included a reprint of a 1970s story, starring Jon Pertwee. I much prefer this art to the modern stuff inside the Mag.

Tennant, Smith, now Capaldi, three-four years seems to be the new max for actors' playing the Doctor. A far cry from the days of Pertwee and Tom Baker.
If Chibnall really wants to be daring, cast a woman in the role. I know there's been a section of Who fandom that have been desiring this for years but I'm not sure if the BBC would let him. I do recall that one parody special with Rowan Atkinson that had a female Doctor played by Joanna Lumley if memory serves.
But I do hope the Chibnall stays with an older Doctor instead of returning to the youngsters. Nothing wrong with them, but Capaldi brought back a Classic feel to the show with his demeanor and appearance which I appreciated.

Nothing wrong with them, but Capaldi brought back a Classic feel to the show with his demeanor and appearance which I appreciated. Thing is, three to four years has generally been the average for a Doctor, going all the way back to the sixties: Hartnell did three full seasons and a couple of stories in season four (1963-66), Troughton did slightly less than three full seasons (1966-1969), Davison did one story under three full seasons (1982-84), Colin Baker two full seasons plus one story (1984-86) and McCoy, three (1987-89). McGann did one story, Eccleston one season, and the most recent three Doctors will have each done three plus the odd Special. Pertwee and Tom Baker are the only Doctors in 54 years ever to have done more than three complete seasons, and both of them initially found it difficult to get work afterwards because they were too closely associated with the role. I agree the Doctor should be older. I really can't see him as a woman, though.

Although I think Peter Capaldi suits the role better than those two. An older Doctor seems 'right' to me, but to the BBC it might be about getting a connection with the younger generation. As for a female Doctor, I hope it doesn't happen... but of course it's a conversation that crops up every time there's a regeneration.

Ever since 1981, when JN-T used the idea to stir up press interest. Thanks for that, John... It will happen sooner or later. The media attention such a move would generate is enough to ensure that, if you ask me. I agree that it would be a bad move though, but then, I really dislike it when heroes suddenly change gender or a female is shoehorned into a pre-existing male persona, like She-Hulk or female Thor, for example. Contrary to what such a move is (presumably) meant to achieve, I think there's something inherently sexist about it. It's like the writers or producers who sanction such a move are paying lip service to gender equality, while simultaneously admitting that a woman couldn't carry the lead in an entirely new role. As if a female lead in sci-fi or fantasy could only work when it's tied into a pre-existing and successful male role.
