I'm curious what people do for their bookshelf comics. What type of bookshelves? Where did you buy them? What's worked and what hasn't?

I've just got a pair of IKEA Billy cases. Not ideal (the shelves sag quite a bit) but they get the job done.

This post is prompted by my purchase last April of these from Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0056QQ58Y?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpageBookshelves of this basic mold have been my solution all my life. 5 shelves including 3 adjustable shelves. A thin back nailed in. Beginning with one I bought second hand from a comic store years ago. I bought some more from Office Depot and later some from Staples and later one from Wal-Mart. These things aren't meant to be moved and every move destroyed a couple. I've bought many over the years. But made it to Hawaii with only one, the one from Wal-Mart which has now weathered 3 moves, including one across a quarter world. A new record for this type of shelf. The opposite of the record is the purchase from Amazon I made in April. I had 4 of these assembled by May of this year. The adjustable shelves immediately bent under the weight of the comics (I made sure to put all hardcovers on the fixed shelves). And this past week, 4 different shelves across 3 of the bookcases have seen fit to collapse. The little plastic thing that held them in cracked and the hole it fit in tore enough that no other can fit in there and remain without some form of adhesive. I'm annoyed and need to look for better shelves. I'm curious if I should continue with this type of bookshelf, see if Office Depot has some, or look into other types of solutions. Either nicer bookcases or building shelves straight into the wall. I've always liked these because they are adjustable and seem to fit my comics just about right. The main criterion is fitting comics, preferably lots of comics. I currently have 5 bookcases, but lots of books in boxes I would like to get to the shelf. And I would enjoy spreading the books out a bit more to make nicer displays. 8 of these bookcases fit in my dining room. I could fill around 12. My house has lots of wall space, but little space that isn't often in direct sunlight. The dining room is sunny, but it's in the middle of the house, so the comics are far from the windows and facing perpendicular. Not ideal, but the best I have. Lots of sun here.

I pretty much use the same generic bookcases I purchased from Target ten years ago to hold everything. Some are used for DVDs, some for books, some for graphic novels, and some for toys/collectibles. I don't know that I'd need a specific kind of shelving for graphic novels. None of the shelves have buckled under the weight.

I have one almost identical to the one you just got, but in black. It's not going to last forever because of the particle board shelves. Maybe one day I'll get some good wood tools and build one from solid wood.

I've got a pair of cheap Walmart shelves that bend under all the book weight. Once I settle down in a house or apartment that I won't plan on moving out of I'll upgrade them for something better.

These are shelves I inherited from my wife that she had before we married, but they are my preferred shelf for tpb, GN and hc. If I could get more I would, currently I only have 2... They are tall and narrow, so the shelves don't sag, the shelves are not adjustable so sturdier as well. They are the right high to fit everything from a Marvel omnibus and smaller. You need more of them obviously if you have a lot of books, but the durability is worth it. Here is the other one next to something similar (the sturdy one on the right, the other on the left) but that one had adjustable shelves (metal pegs though, not plastic clips to hold the shelf) and is not quite as sturdy. However, the shelf size options are far less suitable for GN/tpb/hc and you have to have shelves that are too short to hold them (like regular paperback book size or DVD/blueray size) if you set the other shelves to the size of trades. I would suggest looking for second hand furniture stores, estate sales and the like to find sturdier shelves at decent prices, which is where a lot of our older, better constructed shelves come form. It does make it a challenge to have matching pieces though. Another option is finding store going out of business sales when they are selling off the fixtures (I know a gut who got all his shelving when Walden Books in the local mall closed several years back, and another who collects movies who got a lot of shelves when Blockbuster went out). Not as convienent and easy as going to Ikea of Home Depot, but you often get better stuff at better prices. -M
