Anyone go to this year's Baltimore Comic Con? I was only able to go for Friday, so I missed out on Batman day and some of the weekend exclusive guests, but I still had a great time for the few hours I was there on Friday. Met some cool creators and picked up some nice additions to the collection. Here's a snapshot of some of my haul from this year.
Clockwise from top-left: A signed Neal Adams 2015 sketchbook, autographed photo from Edward James Olmos, Superman #317 signed by Neal Adams, a Batman sketch by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, hardcover collection of Days of Future Past (only $10!), and Infinity Gauntlet #1 signed by Jim Starlin, George Perez, and Joe Rubenstein.
Some highlights:
Got to meet Neal Adams. Maybe because it was Friday, but I expected to have to wait in a long line and was pleasantly surprised when there were only a couple of people ahead of me. We chatted a for a few minutes as he signed my stuff. He was pleasant and humorous, and we had a lighthearted conversation about my facial features. I guess when you're an artist, you probably can't help but notice and compare people's unique facial characteristics. :-) I was surprised at the size of his booth -- it was huge, with tons of prints laid out all over the place. He was working on a sketch as we chatted, and I managed to overhear some of his conversations with others when they asked about commission prices. It was kinda funny, as he was pretty blunt: "Oh you want a sketch? Here are the prices. It's a LOT of money!"
And in case anyone was wondering -- yes, he was wearing the infamous blue shirt. :-)
I got Jim Starlin to sign my copy of Infinity Gauntlet #1. This was something of a momentous occasion for me, as it's the first book I've gotten signed by writer, peniciller, and inker. It took me three separate conventions across two years.
BCC is still a comics-focused convention, but they did have a small Hollywood presence this year. Ming-Na Wen and Edward James Olmos from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D as well as Katie Cassidy and Paul Blackthown from Arrow were scheduled to appear. I missed most of these, as three of the four guests were weekend only. But I did manage to meet Edward James Olmos on Friday who also amazingly had nobody in his line when I got his autograph. As a result, we were able to have a pleasant chat for a few minutes until some more people started to queue up.
Some other creators I got to meet and get stuff signed by: Mark Waid, Mike Grell, Marv Wolfman, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Greg Pak, JG Jones, and Frank Cho. Again, maybe because it was a Friday, but all the lines were real short, never more than 10 people or so. That said, I think some of it was good timing for me, as I did pass Greg Pak and Mark Waid's table a couple of times when lines were a lot longer. Of all the creators at the show, I'd say the longest lines were at the tables of David Finch, Charles Soule, Amanda Conner, and Jimmy Palmiotti.
