In the middle of a cornfield. My home town is so small it doesn't have a stop light. If it gets one, I'm moving to a smaller town.  My hometown is free of stop lights as well, even though it's the largest town in the county (which isn't saying much, given the latter's population of something like 7,000). The old joke about a town being so small it has a triangle, not a square, is quite true in the case of Stamps, Ark. Stamps was the home of Maya Angelou for a very long time. It's the main setting for her memoir "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," which I am reading at present. Highly recommended. |

Yep. Her grandmother's store, which is the setting for much of the book, I stopped in a few times the summer of (IIRC) '73 with the guy I was working with as part of a school-based summer jobs program for poor kids like us. I'd never been there before, since it was on the black side of the tracks, but he was black & so knew it well.
I'd have been more appreciative of just where I was if I'd read the book, but unfortunately I didn't do so till about a dozen years later, during my early days as a newspaper reporter in Little Rock.

I was thinking there weren't any stop lights in the town in which I live, but upon further review I think there may be. The town straddles a state highway that runs between two larger towns. I think the city limits now embrace those two stoplights though they don't actually "feel" like they're in town. |

Wuppertal, Germany. Home of the oldest operating monorail system in the world, and the famous Pina Bausch dance theater.  Here is the "Schwebahn" passing through the Bayer factory grounds, where Aspirin and heroin were invented. We are so proud. At least you're not a resident of Moore, OK (and I never will be) as they proudly advertise being the birthplace of Toby Keith; who has caused more damage to mankind than heroin or aspirin. LOL ! I've lived in OKC for 10 years now. Born and lived in Omaha, spent most of my childhood on a farm outside Denison, IA, went to college in Sioux City, and then later lived in Los Angeles. Still consider myself in Iowan at heart though no one in my immediate family farms anymore, though my parents are retired and rent out the farm land and pasture. |

Torrance, CA
Southern part of Los Angeles county. About 15 minutes from the beach...mostly well known to Whedon-ites as Sunnydale. Yep, Torrance HS was Sunnydale High and Buffy's house is walking distance from my place.

When I hear that "but it's a dry heat" line here in the very humid South (only other place I've ever lived), I tell people that your oven produces a dry heat, too, but you wouldn't want to stick your head in there. |

I'll take "dry heat" over Southern humidity every time. I remember being astonished on my visit to Texarkana back in '95 that it could be in the 50s and you still were soaked with sweat within seconds of going outside.

I'm not from here and still never felt like home even going on 14 years. It never will feel like it because it's not where I would have ever went on my own. I don't get into politics much but the educational branch of this states government is a crime. Paying teachers what they do and while this god____ oil & gas industry every tax break and assist they need makes me sick. Especially since high school education cant net me much else that will take care of my family than a job supporting. Not saying the drilling for oil & gas is evil, but many, many of the people in it are evil greedy ..... It's too unbalanced here from my perspective. Teachers are important to our children becoming responsible citizens. Yet our dedication of time, money, and attention goes to inefficient energy. Sorry. [/rant] |

I lived in Maryland until last September.
Since then, well, I would probably call myself a hobo. In the last 9 months, have spent time in 10 different states and 6 different countries.
I seem to be in Maryland again at the moment.
The next place I hope to actually have an address again is Hawaii.
