I glanced at Dr Ruth's bio....at 17, in Palestine, she joined the Haganah (the predecessor to the Israeli Defense Force) and was trained as a sniper!. She never saw combat, but was wounded by mortar fragments, at age 20, during an attack on Jerusalem, during the War of Independence. I can't picture that little woman with a rifle in her hands, picking off targets from great distance....let alone people! She wasn't much longer than a rifle herself. It's also a great visual because I've only ever seen her as an old lady, so that's how I picture Deadshot Ruth as well.
I think she once said that even in her old age she could still disassemble and reassemble a rifle while blindfolded.
It was sad to learn that she was sent to Switzerland as a child for her safety after the SS arrested her dad, with her mom promising they'd pick her up later, but she never saw her parents again.

Actor James B Sikking has passed away, at age 90. Probably best known as SWAT team commander Lt Howard Hunter, on Hill Street Blues nd as the captain of the Excelsior, in Star Trek III. He had a long list of credits, though, including minor roles in Von Ryan's Express and In Like Flint, in the 60s, to Outland, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Ordinary People, Perry Mason, Combat!, Mission Impossible, MASH, Columbo, Doogie Howser and Brooklyn South.

I'm so sad to hear this about Bob even though he lived a very long life, but I'm at least happy he is together again with his beloved wife. He left us with so many comedic treasures, and while so many great television moments come to mind, this early stand-up classic is such a great example of the tremendous wit and brilliant understated delivery he was known for:

Bob made me laugh for over 50 years....brilliant comedian. I had just been watching the entire run of The Big Bang Theory, where he finally won an Emmy, as Professor Proton. Hilarious stuff, especially as Sheldon's Jedi mentor, after his death, within the series. Without Bob, we'd never had the Drinking Game of the 80s, where you watch the Bob Newhart Show and drink every time someone says "Bob," and chug it when they say "Hi, Bob!" Loved his Lincoln's Gettysburg Address...

One more classic Bob moment for good measure, hands down the best description of baseball I've ever heard.

R. I. P. Duke Fakir, the last founding member of the Four Tops. Fakir was with the Tops from 1953 until his retirement earlier this year. One of the great harmony voices from one of the great soul groups.

Legendary British bluesman John Mayall passed today at age 90. -M
One of those people who can legitimately be said to be the rock that started the landscape-altering avalanche. His Bluesbreakers band was to British blues what Del Close was to American improv comedy. Eric Clapton; Mick Taylor; the whammo! triumvirate of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Peter Green; and many more.
