Editor and writer Brian Augustyn has passed away at 67.He worked as an Editor for NOW Comics and DC, as well as writing the first Elseworlds Gotham by Gaslight and writing JLA: Year One and The Flash with Mark Waid. RIP Good Sir. He'd be a loss if Gotham by Gaslight were the only comic he'd ever written. Thank you, Mr. Augustyn.

Also passing away was Martial Artist Bob Wall. Probably best known for playing O'Hara, in Enter the Dragon, one of Mr Han's fighters. His character murders Bruce Lee's sister and the pair face off in Han's tournament, fighting to the death. Wall was part of the California Karate circle that included Joe Lewis and Chuck Norris. he and Lewis opened a karate dojo together and Lewis later sold his share to Norris. He also appeared in Way of the Dragon 9Return of the Dragon, in theaters), Game of Death, Black Belt Jones, Enter the Ninja, Invasion USA (the Norris Cannon Group film), Firewalker and Sidekicks. Wall raised controversy when he took issue with statements by Steven Seagal, who claimed he could beat any of the fighters of Wall's circles, including Norris and responded with himself and a group of martial artists willing to take Seagal up on a fight, which became known as the Dirty Dozen. Seagal never took up their counter-challenge or ever faced anyone in actual combat, sporting or street fight. In 1995, Wall and several partners in his real estate business were charged with tax fraud and grand theft, with the tax charges being dropped. Wall pled no contest to grand theft and served 48 days, of a 2 year sentence, before being released on probation. Chuck Norris put up the money to pay back investors, with the proviso that Wall be released so that he could work to pay back the loan. He was released and given a 5 year probationary period. The original charges stemmed from deals which were then used to pay off personal debts, without investors' knowledge.

Italian actress Monica Vitti has passed away, at age 90, after suffering from a form of dementia. Over here, she is probably best known as Modesty Blaise, in the 1966 Joseph Losey film, Modesty Blaise, based rather loosely on the comic strip. The film had a slim connection to the original material and the script that writer Peter O'Donnell had crafted, and only appears as anything similar to the character in a dream sequence. O'Donnell turned his script into the first Modesty novel. In Italy, she was a big star and won acclaim for Michael Antonioni's film L'Avventura, as well as his films La Notte, Eclisse and Red Desert. After breaking with Antonioni, she starred in mostly comedies, in the 70s Her last film role was in 1989 and she lived a fairly quiet life after. Her death was mistakenly reported in 1988, by Le Monde, stating she had died of an overdose of barbiturates. Sadly, this image was from publicity stills and she only appears looking like that, in the aforementioned dream sequence. Taken as a 60s surreal comedy, it's not a bad film; taken as a Modesty Blaise adventure, it is pretty bad.

It's nice that they copied the hair-style from the comic-strip.

It's nice that they copied the hair-style from the comic-strip. For that sequence, yeah; but, the bulk of the film, it is her own blond hair, in a contemporary style and no action gear, just 60s high fashion.

Sounds kind of like the Cathy Lee Crosby version of Wonder Woman.

Well, that was probably closer to a direct adaptation than what Modesty Blaise ended up being. Modesty was played for 60s camp, rather than a straight adventure. Wonder Woman was played straight, but had unintended camp. Wonder Woman got a second chance with Lynda Carter and the pilot film proved a hit, though it had some deliberate camp in in. Carter was way more charismatic than Crosby and they stuck closer to Marston (minus the kinky bits). Modesty has a semblance of the plot that Peter O'Donnell had written, but veers off of it rather handily. It went for style over adventure and has tons of style, but middling adventure. It was a shame, as Terrence stamp was the right type for Willie Garvin, but, never really got to be deadly. Dirk Bogarde was pure camp. Vitti isn't bad; but, it isn't Modesty... O'Donnell was extremely disappointed and threw up his hands when Losey and the producers wouldn't listen to him. he took his script and turned it into the first novel, Modesty Blaise. He produced several more, which are all great reads. I used to have the Titan Books collections of Modesty Blaise and in one, he talks about the production and his frustrations. He questioned why Vitti wasn't dressed as Modesty for the film main plot, but they could do it for a dream sequence. I tend to agree, though I don't think she had to mirror the strip for the whole film; but, for action scenes for the third act it made sense. It's still a better film than Casino Royale or Fathom, in my opinion. More watchable than the tv pilot, with Ann Turkel, though it stuck closer to the characters. I don't really count that My Name is Modesty film, as it was a quickly done to maintain the film rights, but they never followed it up. It was well done, except the lead actress looked horribly anorexic. The film can be watched on Youtube, if you are curious.

R. I. P. jazz guitarist Joe Diorio. Diorio did some great lead work and was an excellent sideman with Sonny Stitt, Horace Silver and especially Eddie Harris.

Renowned Spanish actress Margarita Lozano has died at the age of 90 (a week short of her 91st birthday). She appeared in a number of classic European films including Viridana, The Night of the Shooting Stars, Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, but is probably best known to American audiences as Mrs. Consuelo Baxter in Fistful of Dollars.
