Apparently he was offered the choice of role of either Vader or Chewbacca by Lucas, and he chose Vader because he didn't want to spend six weeks in a gorilla costume (Lucas had described Chewie as being a hairy, gorilla-like creature) and because people always remember the villain more than the hero.

Sad news. First time I saw Mr. Prowse would've been in The Tomorrow People (season one, '70s)... He looks like the world's most bizarre carnival game. Gotta love 1970s tv sci-fi, on any continent.

Star Wars is getting to be a small community, among the cast: Mark Hammill, Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels, Garrick Hagon (Biggs), Denis Lawson (Wedge)..maybe some of the other smaller speaking parts. Billy Dee Williams is still around, from the Empire additions, as is Ken Colley (Adm Piett) and Julian Glover (Gen Veers). Bound to happen, after 40 years.

Just saw the prolific science fiction writer Ben Bova has died, apparently due to Covid-related complications. He was 88 years old.

Bova was the editor of Analog magazine when I was buying it regularly. He will be missed.

Olympic Decathlon Gold Medalist and community activist Rafer Johnson has died at 86. His 1960 gold medal performance was before my time. But he spent his working life making the world a better place.

This passing actually occurred several months ago, but I have only just learnt of it due my Doctor Who Magazines being delayed in shipping due to COVID. I don't recall seeing this posted on this thread earlier, so I thought I should do it now. Apologies for the repeat if this has already been posted.
Doctor Who writer Pip Baker (half of the husband and wife team of Pip and Jane Baker) passed away on April 14. Pip and Jane contributed the stories "The Mark of the Rani", "The Terror of the Vervoids", "The Ultimate Foe" and "Time and the Rani" to the classic series. With that first story, they created one of series iconic villains: the Rani (played by the amazing Kate O'Mara).
And while Kate is sadly no longer with us, the new series could also introduce a new incarnation of the Rani, just as they did with the Master.

David L. Lander, better known to us all as Squiggy of Laverne and Shirley fame has died age 73 from complications due to Multiple Sclerosis. A stranger and funnier neighbor than most, he provided lots of belly laughs and smiles to many.

Here's the details on the full album:

RIP Hugh Keays-Byrne He was Toecutter in the OG Mad Max film & was Immortan Joe in Mad Max : Fury Road. Bummer. Got to meet Hugh at a convention a few years back during the 35th anniversary of Mad Max, when I bought a box set of the original trilogy in the charity auction which was then signed by Hugh and Steve Bisley (Goose). A really nice guy (both of them, actually), very friendly and easy to talk to, and not all like the Toecutter (although he could be intimidating close up as he was quite a big guy). A very passionate advocate for Indigenous rights.
I am now really glad I took the opportunity to meet him. He will be missed.

A stranger and funnier neighbor than most, he provided lots of belly laughs and smiles to many. Hello! That's too bad. Loved him as the play-by-play announcer in A League of Their Own and as the voice of the lead weasel, in Who Framed Roger Rabbi? I recall seeing Lander and McKean on one of the morning talk shows, in the era, playing a few songs (probably promoting the album). They did some pretty good 50s rock n roll. He wrote a memoir about his career and MS, some time back, as I recall when we got it, at B&N.
