Surprised that this hasn't been mentioned here earlier, as the news has been all over the place today. Argentine soccer/football star Diego Maradona has died at the age of 60 (of a heart attack; he'd had a number of health issues in recent years, and has had problems with obesity and alcohol abuse in the past). His career as a pro ran from the late '70s through the late '90s, playing for teams both in his native Argentina and in Europe. He was also the star of the Argentine national team in the 1980s and '90s, leading them to a World Cup victory in 1986 - where he also gained considerable notoriety for scoring a goal in a quarter-final match against England that was basically a hand-ball foul not called by the ref (it was later dubbed "the hand of God"). He was considered by many to be the best player of all time - personally, I still think that honor belongs to Pele. This is Murica, we only have soccer so we can have soccer moms. I used to watch the NASL; but when the league died, lost interest in soccer. I recognized the name, when I saw it on NPR's site; but, mostly from references on British tv shows.

Also missed was former NY mayor David Dinkins, the first African-American to hold the office.

Also missed was former NY mayor David Dinkins, the first African-American to hold the office. I thought about mentioning him but I didn't want to risk getting political. This is sad news about Mayor Dinkins whom I have a lot of respect for, unlike the character that followed (and I said so before and after that horrible September day which was voting day and looked to be the last anyone would hear about him as he was not running having been such a total disgrace, which a lot of folks had to learn all over again).
Maradona was all over the news here tonight, semi-shocking at age 60!

RIP to Markus Paul, the Dallas Cowboys Strength and Conditioning Coach. On Tuesday, there was a medical emergency at the team facility and he was rushed to the hospital. He passed on Wednesday, at age 54. The cause of death (and the nature of the medical emergency) has not been reported (only that it was not COVID-related) per the family's wishes for privacy. Condolences to his family, friends and co-workers.

RIP to country music's Hal Ketchum, best remembered for his '90s hit "Small Town Saturday Night." I wasn't a huge fan but I respected his talent.

My late stepfather said that Pele, Maradona and George Best were the three best players in history.
I’m too young to have personally witnessed Pele and George Best. But as someone who was (and is) very much into international football, I remember being impressed by the likes of Maradona, despite naturally supporting my home team of England.

The first footballer whose name I learned from watching was Ruud Gullik, although I had probably heard the names Johan Cruyff and Pele before. I think I did see Pele come out of retirement for some special match. My Dad and his friend would watch repeats on Sundays... places like Munchen-Gladback stuck in my awareness, and a team named Ajax. Sometimes we'd see British games with Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Leeds United, but so few games you couldn't follow properly, couldn't tell all the scarf colours. Like ice hockey and surfing, when performed well it can rank as an artform.

David Prowse has passed away at the age of 85.He, of course, most famously, wore the Darth Vader armor. He also appeared as Frankenstein's Monster in 3 films, played in A Clockwork Orange, and appeared on TV shows like The Saint and Doctor Who. He also trained Christopher Reeve when he was bulking up to play Superman. RIP Good Sir, you will be fondly remembered and missed.

Prowse was also appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2000 for his work in a number of PSA featuring Green Cross Code Man aimed at children between '67 and '90, which he considered one of his proudest achievements. -M

Sad news. Although, frankly, he's looked as if he wasn't long for this world for a long time. His portrayal of Darth Vader was fantastic, of course, and is at least 50% of the reason why Vader became such an iconic movie villain so quickly (the other 50% being James Earl Jones' voice, of course). The Green Cross Code Man was a fixture of my generation's childhood here in the UK.
I met him in person once (well, he was dressed up in the Darth Vader armour) and I got his autograph. It was around the time of the release of Return of the Jedi and he was doing a promo at a local toy shop. Unfortunately I lost it at some point, so I was happy to pick up a copy of Marvel's Star Wars movie adaptation treasury that was signed by him a few years ago.
Yeah, sad to hear this news.

I saw him at a few comic cons in NY in the 80's. Those were the days...

Just heard the news on the BBC World Service. As part of the obit, they played an original recording of him doing Vader's dialogue (apparently he did not know he was being overdubbed until the film came out). I have to say that I do not think his pleasant West Country burr would inspired nearly as much terror throughout the galaxy as James Earl Jones' booming bass. As already noted, he appeared in a host of classic British TV shows, usually playing the heavy. He appeared in Doctor Who as the Minotaur in "The Time Monster", The Tomorrow People as an android in "The Medusa Strain", and two episodes of Arthur of the Britons (as two different characters).

I've had great fun spotting Prowse in British tv shows over the years. He appears at the beginning of an episode of the Champions, as a man working out in a gym, who gets show up by star William Gaunt, with the aid of his super abilities. He plays the muscle for a street vendor, in an episode of Callan and would play the bodyguard of an arms dealer in the Callan movie. He's the executioner in The People That Time Forgot and was one of the cast of Terry Gilliam's Jabberwocky.
The first picture I ever saw of him was from a people magazine spread of the actors under the costumes, in Star Wars (along with Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker and Anthony Daniels) where he is shown holding his wife up above his shoulders.

He was also in Kubrick's' Clockwork Orange, the original Casino Royale playing Frankenstein's creation who (which?) he also played for Hammer a couple of times. An interesting career.

Sad news. First time I saw Mr. Prowse would've been in The Tomorrow People (season one, '70s)...
