Is it just me, or did Pittsburgh used to have more big time guests? I have no complaints with any of the guests mentioned in the OP, but it just seems like Pittsburgh used to have...more. The last time I was there, they had Stan Lee. The time before that, they had Margot Kidder and Jack Larson.

The last time I was there, they had Stan Lee. The time before that, they had Margot Kidder and Jack Larson. I think you're pretty much right on that. They had Jim Steranko last year as the Guest of Honor, and Stan Lee two (or three) years ago. It's a pretty weak line-up this year, particularly since Perez, Nebres, and Frenz are at the show every year (not that they're bad necessarily, but if you wanted to meet them, you probably already have). I saw Sienkiewicz' name on the list and thought he was a nice catch, but it turns out he's the GoH this year; I'll go meet him and take a couple of books to be signed (probably some of the Moon Knight issues he did with Moench) and hope that he has a print for sale of the alternative cover to the recent Moon Knight #1 he did (it's gorgeous, but I'm not paying $75 for a copy of the book when I only paid $5 for the Skottie Young variant). Overall, this year's group really lacks the "Wow" factor. The other big name they have, which I didn't list because I doubted it held any interest for this group, is Katie Cook, who writes the "My Little Pony" series. I'll be taking a couple of my daughters' issues to get her to sign; it would be cooler if they had an artist from the book and I could get each of my girls a sketch, but they'll be just as happy with signed books.

Pretty sure the artist, Andy Price, is there as well. But yeah, they've done the circuit a billion times by this point as well. No wow factor, as you said.

You are correct about Andy Price being there. I may have to get to their table first and see if he can draw a couple of sketches for my girls.

We bought a print from Andy, and they both signed it. They also signed her My Little Pony #1.

Had a decent day at the show yesterday, but it was a little disappointing. I found out once I got inside that George Perez, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Herb Trimpe were all "Saturday & Sunday only" guests, a fact the show organizers failed to disclose ahead of time. It wouldn't have changed when I went to the show, as I have a busy weekend planned, but I wouldn't have spent the time digging through my collection to find books for each of them to sign if I'd known.
I had a nice conversation with Ron Frenz and got a few books signed by him; a couple of them he looked at closely and remarked that he wasn't sure of the last time he'd signed those particular issues.
I spent some time talking with Katie Cook and Andy Price, the folks who do the My Little Pony comic. Andy did two headshot sketches for my daughters (and one for me), and I bought a couple of prints that Katie had drawn (I didn't know she was an artist as well as a writer) for my girls.
There were a couple of other artists whose work caught my eye, so I bought a couple prints from each that are going to wind up being hung in my comic book room.
My haul was high on quantity, but lacking in quality (as defined by getting the "Big' books that I wanted). I left without getting any of the top 4 books on my list (there was not a single copy of Werewolf by Night #32 in the room), but I did pick up a lot of other cool things, which I'll share over in the What Have You Purchased Lately thread.

That's incredibly frustrating, as well as highly irresponsible of the organizers. Very sorry to hear this. I know how excited you were. So glad that portion, at least, worked out!

Follow-up to above note:
My loving and gracious wife changed her plans to go out shopping on Sunday afternoon so that I could go back to the show. If I ever write anything bad about my wife on this site, would you please refer me back to this post so I remember just how good I have it?
Spent about 20 minutes talking with Herb Trimpe as he was working on a sketch for another person. He had some very interesting thoughts on the trend toward "corporate" comicons (as opposed to an independent show like Pittsburgh) and how the "corporate" events give short shrift to the actual comics and creators in exchange for focusing on pop culture items like TV and movies. When I handed him my books to sign (Marvel Spotlight #12 and Incredible Hulk #'s 124 and 142), he smiled widely and said, "Ah! Someone who appreciates the classics", which led into a brief discussion about how it was his work that got me interested in the Hulk, a character I'd largely ignored for years.
Also got to stop by Bill Sienkiewicz's booth. He was in the middle of doing an art piece, using pen and paint to do a very detailed piece; it was really cool getting to watch a master work like that. When he finished, he was able to take some time to sign some books (I got Moon Knight #29, Thor #332, and Midnight Sons Unlimited #2 signed), but he had a fairly long line, so I didn't take up too much of his time.
Unfortunately, George Perez had an emergency come up and he had to fly out Saturday night unexpectedly, so I was unable to meet him this time. Hopefully all is well for him and he will be back next year.
Managed to do a little more buying on Sunday, picking up some things that people were discounting late in the weekend.

So glad you got a second chance to enjoy the con, though one day you'll have to tell Perez how you came to the convention two different days and still failed to meet him!
