Official Event WebsiteThis looks like it's going to be an old-school "hotel ballroom" show, like the ones I grew up on, at the Holiday Inn in Strongsville, OH this upcoming Sunday. Nice mix of local comic shops and vendors, a handful of second-tier guests (Dave Nestler and Donald Simpson are the two biggest names, along with a bunch of local artists), and a one-day show with a entrance fee of $3. My 9 1/2 year old daughter and I will be making the two+ hour trip to the event. It will be her first time at a comics show and she is really excited about it; donuts for breakfast, comic boxes to dig through and collectible tables to peruse, fast food for lunch and probably dinner depending on how long we stay, and a long roadtrip with her comics buddy. The one thing I haven't told her is that there is a group of guys who make a Dr. Who webseries that will be there and that they will have a full-size Tardis along with a Weeping Angel statue for photo-ops; her mind is going to be completely blown, and I fully expect my wife to hear her squeals of joy all the way back in Pittsburgh.

I was considering going, but I'm neither impressed by the vendors (all local shops I could drive to any day) nor the guests. If you're looking for old school hotel ballroom conventions in the NE Ohio area, with cheap entrance fees and real dealers, I recommend the following: www.harpercomics.com/conventions.phpcomicsandfriends.org/lakeeffectcomiccon/

This might not be the best one I could pick, but my main reasons for going to this one are that: 1. I'm on vacation next week, so the out-and-back travel won't tax me before a long work week. 2. I'm not going to Cincinnati for either of their shows in September. 3. I'm not going to Wizard World Pittsburgh later this year. 4. It's a great chance to hang out with my daughter for the day.

It is a lot of extra work to move store stock to shows, as you have to break down displays in store to pack up and then put it back together after the show to open for business. Many times, con stock is kept in storage and/or "in the van" that travels to shows, so while you could go to their store any time, you may never see what they are offering for sale at cons when you do. Sometimes it is boxes of bargain stock they only take to shows and sometimes it is key books that would collect dust on the walls of the shop but has a chance at moving at the shows, plus they may be more willing to work a deal at a show than in the store. -M -M
